I had a wierd dream about asking to be on the Saturday Night Live writing team. It's kinda wierd but, while I have SNL dreams pretty seldomly, I have had them for a very very very long time. Makes ya wonder why. Especially since I don't like the newer Saturday Night Live.
For me, the ultimate SNL cast was the first with Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Dan Akroyd and so on. Runner up is the Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks years. To me, those years were the best. I think, though, that the recent cast (Chris Kattan, the guy they get to play George Bush and Sheri Oteri) is terrible. Maybe it's just me, but the humour is funny once. Maybe twice. But doesn't last. Like the Coneheads - yeah they were funny when they showed up the first time. And the second time? Funny because they were spoofing Close Encounters. Then they went of Family Feud. Then they went back to Remulac. They did different stuff.
On the flip side, you have Mango...which is the same joke every time you see him. Just with different guests. Same with the Cheerleaders. Same joke, different cheers, much too long. At least Molly Shannon's Catholic Schoolgirl (I can never remember her name) was put in different situations, and to me, those are the best sketches that team does. Roxbury guys...no thanks. I actually put this cast below the Denny Dillon/Charlie Rocket/Gilbert Godfrey years...I kinda like them.
Then again, they're comedy writers and I'm not. And I still watch SNL occasionally. Sometimes they surprise me with a cool sketch I really dig.
