Its funny how many people who I've shown Planet of the Apes to are surprised at how philosophical it is, expecting mindless sci-fi action.

Well, it attacks so many basic assumptions about what defines us, as well as our assumptions about the ethical treatment of animals. Boulle opened a big can of worms when he wrote the book (which I recommend). I suppose that it reflects the growing disillusionment with the whole 'god made the universe for man' myth. Obviously, we need to re-think a lot of stuff.

assuming you are not talking about the rat-arse Burton "re-imagining" with the lame (and very silly) twist ending, then yes, it is...

(sorry - I have an opinion about the remake)
