I have been staying up inordinate amounts of time watching old Hollywood Squares (mostly for the occasional Vincent Price, but I still love the old show).
That, and when "Late Night Black&White" runs old 'What's My Line?" episodes. I just love how everyone really dressed up just to be on TV, and how... dignified and obviously intelligent the host is... Why aren't game shows like this now? *sighs*
Even the new Press Your Luck spinoff "Whammy" is horrible. Nothing beats the original. :)
A few things for Kevin, since he's apparently reading:
First off, thanks for the LJ code.
Second, as classy (for game shows) as the 50s B&W ones were (though they made modern advertising-on-the-set seem subtle), that's how tacky the 70s ones were... my favorite being Match Game. It's a lil frightening that they WERE dressing up to be on the show, yet... egads, the hair and clothes. But games shows are great as cultural time capsules.
Am I the only one who never found Vincent Price remotely scary? Campy, yeah (Get a looka s his Goldfoot movies), and really funny, but never remotely scary.
I really dig the 1950s game shows, too, especially To Tell the Truth. And yeah, they were really snazzy dressers back then. Kitty Carlisle wore tiaras, for heaven's sake, and all the men had buzz cuts. I think color is what killed that snazzy stuff, though. There are a few To Tell the Truth episodes in color with the 1950s type casts, and they look boring with the same white dresses and grey suits.
Frankly, I'm pretty sure it was the invention of color that led to the 1970s (The decade that taste forgot).
