Sorry I've been so quiet lately, but I've been really busy setting everything up for the convention. It all went wrong. Shoulda known SOMETHING was up when my haircutting appointment got cancelled first thing in the day...

Okay, many years ago, both the roomie and I were Kinkoids. I worked at Kinko's as both Computer Services AND the print shop services. So I know what they can do when you play the instruments right. So I picked up some labels before Best Buy closed, grabbed the laptop and setup their little CD pressing program.

When I got to Kinko's I had a PDF file all setup for them. The nice thing about PDF is that it prints EXACTLY like you see it on the screen. If you use a template, then it prints exactly on what the template is made for. It took FOREVER to get any prints at all, because their computer services stations were a MESS and there were no printer drivers at all. I ended up downloading a 5MB driver over a 28.8 connection...not fun.

I had the folks behind the counter make a proof of the CD labelsfor me, and the proof looked gorgeous. I told the guy behind the counter to print 5 more for ten labels total. While those were printing, I ran my prints, which looked gorgeous.

Afterwards, I went to the counter and had them cut my tabloid sized prints down so they'd be letter sized, but print to the edge.

I got everything back, and looked it over. I was VERY unhappy.

Here's the CD Label I made:

Here's what the CDs look like now:

They SUCK. The idiots at Kinko's, instead of running the rest of the labels from the PDF file I made, ran them from the PROOF they made on a standard copier. The margins all shiften, the colors bleached out and they weren't even straight on the damned label. This completely ruined the "Comico Logo" effect I was going for.

If it wasn't for the fact thatI had no more label paper AND they were closing, AND I had no time to setup more, I would have returned them. I figured as long as I painted out the uneven white "crescent" with a marker, and filled in the middle "clear" ring I could at least salvage the labels. That whole Comico look was GONE, though.

One I got home, I noticed they also fucked my prints up. I ran the cutter when I was at Kinkos - it has a lit line for cutting if you don't know the exact measurements you need to cut. Although cutting an 8.5x11 piece of paper from 11x17 IS PRETTY STANDARD FOR A FULL BLEED CUT. They chopped off parts of my copyright notices, left white strips on sides of them and it didn't even measure 8.5x11.

Depending on how much cash I have after the con, I may pick up my own laser printer. When I worked in PA, we had what was considered a store..."in need of guidance." This one was in need of a kick to the ass. :P

However, it's all done. Leftover CDs and prints will be sold online...if they're popular, I'll make lots more. :D
