I went to the CF Penns in Hartselle, Alabama in 1999. I still have an arterial blockage from the "1 all the way 6." :9
Have you ever eaten at The Varsity, Dreamland Barbecue Ribs or Milo's Hamburgers?
If you have, then you know that Atlanta, Tuscaloosa and Birmingham are proud of these hometown restaurants. Decatur, too, has its special restaurant that serves hamburgers, hotdogs, fish and chicken. C.F. Penn is different from other burger joints because cooks deep fry burgers in hot grease.
The lingo you use when you order your food also makes Penn's unique. If you order a cheeseburger with onions and mustard, for example, you would say "1 all the way 6." If you want a cheeseburger with only mustard, you'd say "1 cheese without" or "1 without," if you didn't want cheese.
The prices are low, and the service is great. When I go, I always sit at the counter, and the friendly ladies who work at Penn's talk to me about school or things happening around town.
Two mysteries surround the restaurant. First, why isn't Penn's open later, so customers can enjoy a burger for supper? Secondly, what is the secret ingredient that makes Penn's beef patties so famous? I don't know the answers, but if you're curious, stop by and ask.
I've been eating at Penn's since I was 6, and I still love it. Don't miss a chance to try Decatur's most famous restaurant!
Directions: C.F. Penn is on East Moulton Street across from Emiron Music.
Drew Smalley is a Decatur High School sophomore.
