I have decided, that 2006 is specifically out to destroy me.

When I was in middle school, in PE, we had to run "Horses." We ran 1/4 of the way across the basketball court and back. Then 1/2. Then 3/4. Then the whole court. It was during the run back I decided to go go full out, and run as fast as I could. When I hit the finish line, I slipped and began to fall towards the back wall. I braced myself by jumping up on to the wall with my right foot, which acted as a spring to slow me down. No problem there. I landed on my left wrong, though, and broke my ankle.

Unfortunately, this was my first real taste of the double standard men and women have. I told the coaches that I'd hurt my ankle badly, and they basically told me to "suck it up and walk it off." Then they sent me to play soccer. I did what I could, and eventually my leg did feel better. I walked on it the rest of the day, then walked home from school.

That's when I took my jeans off and saw that my ankle had grown a melon. One trip to the emergency room later and I found I suffered that brokn ankle.

The next week a girl took a soccer ball to the gut, and suddenly a troop of six men hefted her up and ran her to the nurse, where a careful examination led to the diagnosis that...she had taken a soccerball to the gut.

I broke my ankle two more times in that year. Once from falling off the roof of our house (where my fear of falling was born) putting up christmas lights, and another time slipping on a wet metal plate on the way home from school.

This has left me with an incredibly weak left ankle. I've gotten very used to it...usually, the ankle will "collpase" inward. I've gotten very good at "catching" that collapse with my other foot. I usualy end up with a twisted ankle, but nothing more. Sometimes I don't catch it in time, and end up with a sprain. Also, the tendons in the area are so weak, that they can loosen up and cause my foot bones to misalign. It takes some working with it, but usually there's a "pop" and it'll go back to where it was.

I found out the park I went to the other day has another "end" to it, much closer to the new house. I went to it an hour ago, and walked down one of the trails. Not one tenth of a mile in, I walked down into a concrete storm drain (part of the train)...only to have my ankle collapse. Being on a steep incline, I couldn't get my other leg on firm ground in enough time. I heard a pop, and fell straight down on the concrete.

After the endorphins kicked in, I walked all the way back to my truck and drove home. I'm hoping it isn't broken, but with the way this year is going, I wouldn't doubt that it is. The ankle itself isn't swollen, the area underneath and in front of the "outside" ankle is very very very sore, and a swollen. The area underneath the inside ankle is sore, but not swollen. I can flex my toes, although flexing them up hurts quite a bit.

If it keeps up past tomorrow, I WILL go to the hospital. An allergy reaction I can handle. Carpal tunnel can be handled, too. Broken bones need to be set and mended.....

I've also decided that this year is going to go much like 2001, and I'm bracing for nine months. Like 2001, NOTHING is impossible. Things will go wrong, and find creative ways to go wrong. The best thing is to roll up into a ball and hope it won't kill you before it goes away.

(Update: I really don't think this is just a sprain anymore....)
