Birthdays are rather low key affairs for me. They don't mean much, prolly because of how they were treated when I was a kid. My birthday is July 26th. I've seen birthday parties in August and June, pushed back so we could have the party when both mom and dad were at home, or when kids would be available.
The parties were just random and didn't really link on my real birthday except for a few times. The parties were usually pretty social affairs, mom invited everyone and their uncle. One year, she didn't invite anyone, and simply had the party in the playground area of our apartment complex, all comers invited. They weren't bad parties at all, they just never really pegged to my birthday. So my birthday never really meant too much. Not that I'm complaining - it's just how I feel about it.
It's always surprised people that I just don't do much for my birthday. I know it completely and totally took
tangentsferret by surprise when one day, as I was living with them, I kind of nonchalantly mentioned it was my birthday. She lightly scolded me for not bringing it up sooner so we could have gone out or something. :)
Last year, living with Dean and Jill, I'd just signed a contract for work with [Major Photo Processing Corporation]. We decided to get some tasty take out to celebrate. As soon as I mentioned it was my birthday, suddenly we went out, and got a cake on the way back.
This year, I just kinda wanted to let it slide. The evening of the 25th, I bought some Calamari Salad (out of grocery chain sushi this one night?!), a frozen pizza and hot wings for my celebratory dinner. Dessert was Moolenium Crunch (a passable substitute for Tin Roof), and a red velvet cake. With a lovely serenade from Emily on my voice mail, I was set for the evening. :)
But I made a mistake. A few months ago we got a new girl working at work. Sweet woman, very giggly and happy. After moving into my cube, we were talking and she asked me what kind of cake I liked. I mentioned I love a red velvet cake. She said she'd try it, as she's never made it before. A few weeks after that, we were talking about birthdays, and I let it slip that my birthday was the same day I started working at [Major Photo Processing Corporation].
I walk into work to find a card on my desk, ANOTHER Red Velvet Cake (with 34 candles (33 and one to grow on)), Vanilla Ice Cream, and all the employees congratulating me on making it to 33.
Low Key this was not. Not when the CEO of the company is patting you on the back. :) It was nice, though, and I let myself go. Ate all the cake I wanted, ate all the ice cream I wanted, had enough coke to kill a horse. After my shift had ended, I wasn't hungry at all, but decided I needed to eat something with maybe just a LITTLE protein in it. Lord knows my pancreas is screaming in frustration over all the sugar. :)
I decided on some Chinese food, but waited to long - one place had closed early, and the other...well...it burned down a few days ago. Seriously. Another one. I got Mexican food instead.
After dinner, I signed on to Second Life to ask a friend a question about some stuff going on, when she IMs me first. I show up and Mari, Robin and Pygar are there (My in-world nieces and nephew I mentioned I mentioned a few months ago). Suddenly, I'm wearing a balloon birthday crown and being presented with a LOVELY "Willow" Guitar that actually plays a song when you click it. Lots of hugging and much thanking until their bedtime. Thanks guys - you'll be getting something VERY shortly as a thank you. :)
The rest of the evening after their bedtime was working on a special project that I hope came out okay. Mari's birthday was the 23rd - I didn't forget it, but I wasn't sure, to be totally honest, what a birthday party would entail in Second Life. I got there, and met some neat folks, but when it came to gift giving - I didn't know we actually passed out gifts. I felt kinda bad about that - it wasn't out of forgetfulness - just ignorance. I'm still pretty new to all this. I worked on something I knew Mari's "agent" would appreciate - and hopefully Mari would as well. :)
And now the day is over, and I'm 33 years and a day old. Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes. Definately wasn't low key at all, but it was wonderful nonetheless.
::hugs to everyone, and I mean it:: :)
Anyone want some Red Velvet cake? I've got a gross ton of it in the fridge. :)
