A Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage is like a Constitutional Amendment banning blacks from the front of the bus.

Instead of constitutional amendments, or allowing gay marriages, why not do the best of both worlds:

Change ALL official government approved marriage licenses into civil unions. Make marriage a non-governmental "label" applied by priests, ministers, religions (any of them). Athiests can label themselves. :)

I approve of civil unions for heterosexuals.

Mighty generous of me, I know. :)

I have to agree.

I can't believe the stupidity in regulating something as intrinsic to personal relationships as permanent coupling, whatever you choose to call it. I can't believe he had the stupidity to climb up on this soapbox during an election year. Gay Republicans do exist. This will do nothing but alienating them. The Christian Right wouldn't have asked for it if he hadn't brought it up himself so he wouldn't have lost anything by keeping his mouth shut. I have to respect him for at least having the courage to stand up for his beliefs, even when it is not going to benefit him at all.

I just wish that amendments were up for popular vote. :(

While i agree with you 100% on this, it's unfortunately extremely impractical because of all the other laws that would have to be amended as a result of the introduced ambiguity. I think most people just see gay marriage as the easiest way for federal government to recognize a long-term same-sex coupling, because it's only really a a handful of laws that have to be changed (or in the case of New Mexico, no laws at all). Not that marriage really counts for anything on the federal level any more thanks to Clinton's DOMA. :-(

I've experienced periodic confusion over the furor against "same sex" legal unions.

As far as I'm concerned, they've been going on for a very long time with no one raising a fuss.
