The nice thing about my work day going from 12 hours to 0 is I can finally plough through the 400+ EMails that have been sitting in my mail box forever. One of whic was an interests meme as per [livejournal.com profile] jessie_c

Austin
I love Austin. With a passion. I've never lived in a city I enjoyed more. Austin has a beautifully liberal culture, tons of vareity, hugely multicultural, beautiful scenery just a scant few miles away. I'd always wanted to live there, and the eight years I spent there were the best of my life. If I end up moving back, I'll be moving to Austin. Or San Marcos if I have my old job, which I also enjoyed...but Austin is home for me. Always has been, always will be.

Bjork
Also known as The Bjork
[livejournal.com profile] hurricane_amy had a hankering for Punk and Seattle Grunge which she introduced me to. But that wasnt' all she was into - and just really enjoyed some eclectic music. She got me into Suzanne Vega and the Sugarcubes at the same time. I really liked Bjork's musical styling, and her accent, and she was just freaking cute. I haven't liked much of her later stuff to be honest, but albums like Debut and Post were great. I love Army of Me and Human Behaviour the most of her songs. Something about her sounding so foreful in them. And the Human Behaviour video is nuts.

Highway Signs
In the late 80s, my family took a trip to Virginia to see a relative, driving the whole way. For some reason, when we left Texas, and I saw the Lousisana highway signs, somehing "clicked" in me, and I got a real interest in highways and highways signs and old abandonned roads. I've actually got several signs at my parents house. I'd love to have them in Canada, but, well, they're illegal as hell to have. :D

One of the stories behind my I-10 sign is that TXDoT was resigning the road at I-10 and Huebner. Dad an I drove by and saw the sign on the road...and he decided we'd grab it. We drove up, put on our hazards, lifted the hood...and immediately threw the sign, lying on the ground, complete with pole, in the bed. WE drove home, dissassembled the signage, and I put it up in my room. The pole? Mom used it for for hanging clothes. :D

Pennsylvania
I moved to Pennsylvania in 1996 to be with [livejournal.com profile] audaciousd, specifically State College. I got one of the best jobs I've ever had there, Swan Technologies, the largest manufacturer of 486s in the late 90s. A small company of 100 people, we were very close, very family, and for the eight months I worked there, just good family. The town was small, sleepy, very remote...teh scenery was gorgeous, if the attitudes weren't. I miss it...and sadly there's almsot NOTHING left for me there.

But what was there was GREAT. Baby's, a 50s era theme diner. Playland, largest arcade east of the Mississippi, Brother's of Hamilton Square with a MASSIVE menu served fast. I miss the place a lot, although, to be honest, there's not much left there to miss. As the town's gotten bigger most of the good stuff has dissapeared and become corpratized. I've never had a job as good as Swan, but DNP has come very close.

The owner of Brother's of Hamilton Square, who remembered us after being gone for over five years. Click on the pic for a closeup of the overhead menu.

Ranma
Only the first 13 episodes. Need I say more?

Sifl-n-Olly
One of the problems I had in PA was I that for the five years I was there, I spent three unemployed. I got a few scattered jhobs here and there but I was pretty seriously depressed from sitting around doing nothing. And then, on MTV, I saw Sifl and Olly. It was bizzarre enough that I caught a few episodes, and suddenly, I was totally hooked.

Nothing made me laugh hard enough I couldn't breathe, but this show, about two sock puppets, did. It lasted three years, and it really lifted my spirits EVERYTIME I saw it.

Texas
Born, Raised and Proud Texan. For all her faults, she's home. For all her politics, you'll never meet a friendlier people. No matter where I'll go, she's home....
