I got the Dark City DVD today. It's not one of the movies on my must-see list, but it IS very special to me.

Deener and I went to go see Dark City for free at The Movies in State College. We got in for free through a friend (I don't htink we ever paid for a movie at The Movies), as part of an employee screening. Dean wanted to see it because it had Richard O'Brien in it, I wanted to see it because...well...Dean wanted to see it.

The movie actually gave me a headache. Despite the fact that the drop dead gorgeous Jennifer Connelly is in it, the series of extremely fast cuts, fast pacing and "hit-the-ground-running" writing had me saying "Wait, can I have a moment to digest this movie?"

Around the same time, I was working on bits and pieces of Closetspace. It had been mostly planned out, and I was working on figuring out the ending.

When I work on a story, I don't really WORK on a story...my characters work on it. And usually they sit in their little worlds, making their stories and fleshing them out. And then we got about 40 minutes into Dark City....

...and a little voice inside my head said "I want to do that!"

Carrie had actually responded to something in "The Real World" and decided to speak up (she's done this twice, and is the only character I know that has "looked outside"). She had seen Jennifer Connelly's character singing in a nightclub, and wanted to do it, too. So I told her, that if she could work it into the story, I'd do it.

Boy did she run with it. She completely reworked the story so she could sing, and in a day. The fastest I've ever had a character rework a story.

Funny seeing that scene again, seeing Carrie singing in her comic, and hearing the music. It's rather sweet.

That was my favorite part of that movie, too. I've got an MP3 if you want it.

4. The Italian Job

PS: Well, I got to rename, rework, and rebias my list. I just figured out I'm an Edward Norton fan.
