Binky Doodles v. The Council of Babies
Apr. 4th, 2004 05:25 amWell, I've been away for a bit, mainly because I haven't had any TIME for anything. And since my days are so boring right now, here's some assorted notes over the last week:
1) Turning the corner
Well, I still don't like this place, but I'm finally settling into the job, it seems. Being put on the nightshift, answering an average of 5 or 6 calls a "day," I'm noticing, I'm feeling much more relaxed. And literally don't "jump" when a call rings through. I'm still mad about some of the scheduling shifts, but, if they stay true to their projected schedules, I should be olkay for at least three weeks.
2) Building being crunched
The freeway that I take was built in the late 70s, and turns into a four lane Farm-to-Market road for the other half of my journey. Only recently have they decided to finish the freeway, and they've been mowing down stuff for the last month or three. It's amazing to see what we've acomplished technologially when you see a smooth straight "chunk" missing from a hill that's been there for as long as you can remember it. It has it's downside, though. There was this big old four story stone house sitting near that Farm-to-Market road, and it looked like it was going to suirvive the freeway. But a few days ago I noticed it was missing it's rock walls, and now is simply a a set of iron girders. Sad really....
3) Rushing to a stop, leavin gunfinished
One thing I hate about my current schedule is having to "slam to a stop." Yesterday, the new laptop decided it wasn't going to like Service Pack 1, and simply shut down. So I reinstalled the whole shebang. And just as I was moving along - 6:30 hit. Time to STOP and get ready for work, despite the fact that I'm almost done. This happens a LOT on this new schedule and it rankles me, because all I can think about while I'm sitting here reading webpages is "I should be working on X" "I should be finishing up Y." Then I go home, and HAVE to sleep instead of working on X or Y. Very frustrating. Happened yesterday when IW as trying to call Nikki...I had to screech to a ahlt or I was NEVER going to wake up and have my afternoon. :P
4) Comics work
Speaking of screeching to a halt, I decided that if I can't bring my laptop to work (big piss-me-off right there, since this was supposed to help me work while I was AT work), I will color here. Computer coloring only takes me two hours or so to do. Pencil shading takes six or seven hours to do...but...since I HAVE the six or seven hours to spare, I decided to pencil color panels I don't have time to computer color. The results, in Closetspace, are pretty nice - although a little uneven. I haven't pencil shaded anything in years. AWFW is a mix of computer and pencil color, which, I think, really hurts this weeks comic. At least it's off kilter, which helps the off kilter feel of AWFW.
6) Action Comics
Someone posted all of ACtion Comics #1 HERE. Supes is an angry "I'm getting my way, dammit" man. And if someone asked me to dinner, and suddenly we're dancing cheek to cheek, I'm leaving. It's also neat to see all the Cowboys (who were the superheroes back then) and the vaguely 10s/20s art styles for a few of the comics. Not to mention the Believe it or Not rip-offs. Check out the back page - not a single sign of X-Ray-Specs!
7) Battery issue
I bought a new battery for the laptop computer, since it seems to like to shut off at the 15 minute mark, but I may hav ebought too soon. It seems if I turn it back on without recahrging it? It works for the rest of the battery life (1.75 hours). Still, I bought before I thought - new battery is on it's way.
8) Mermaid
I'm thinking, once AWFW is over (still a good three years away) that I might push Manpower back a half year or so, and do a quickie version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. The Disneyfication of that story took the bite away and the ultimate act of love in Andersen's was blown away by the Disney Bells and Whistles Marriage. :P I think it's time we saw that comic in the RIGHT way. Hell, if I knew Disney wouldn't be chomping at the bit to sue me, I'd use their designs to tell the story the RIGHT way.
And that's what I've been thinking of mostly this last week or so. I have three days off. I'm SOOOOOOOOOO looking forward to that. :)

Remember, that was 70 years ago. :-)
