BUSY day today.

Woke up, grabbed a quick shower and ran out to pick up the DVD set waiting for me at my PO Box. It's the last of the wish lists I'm going to buy for a while...I'm three months away from the convention and I'd like to have some cash for the con.

After I grabbed the DVD set, I ran off to drop off the piece I did for the Apex & Abyss auction.

From there, I hit the Yaeger/Lamar intersection to see if I could locate bit of the Dillingham PAsture and the old highway. Found both rather easily. Ran over to OfficeMax to pick up a spindle of DVD+R disks. THen I finally got home to watch the DVD set.

The set? STAR BLAZERS! WOOO! Sure the transfer looks like someone thre it into a washing machine for a few decades, but as soon as I heard that opening theme, it became REALLY REALLY hard not to sing along with the theme. :) Man I miss this show. One of my first crushed was on Nova, and one of my first TG dreams was that I was Nova as well. I'm sure there's something Freudian there.

Then came 10pm - and...KILL BILL 2!

You know, I love Tarantino's direction, but I'm not a big fan of his writing. I love watching him do pans loops, cuts, aspect changes, film stock changes...the works. But his writing has always left me cold.

Reservoir Dogs was riveting justr because the story was being told in near real-time. Pulp Fiction was just...hard to follow for me. And not to mention uber violent (The "Man, I just shot Marvin in the face!" really turned me off on that movie). I didn't see Jackie Brown because of that. I just figured it was more of the same.

Then came Kill Bill. And now I realize why I didn't like the other movies: I didn't "Get it."

When it came to Kill Bill, I could follow the story, the violence made sense, even his choice of filming technques and effects made perfect sense - because I LOVE chopsocky movies! :D He's not writing movies, he's picking a genre, nd just diving into it from there, writing to the genre, and filming to it.

The moment I realized "I got it?" The Pai Mei scenes in Kill Bill 2. I got the reference to the oversaturated grainy film stock, the "missed zooms" and even Pai Mei giving away his "I like you" emotion by stroking his beard while he insults you.

My only issues with Kill Bill was the way Bill was characterized at the end. The whole Superhero speech and his "warning shots" made him so much more insane in the movie than in the script, where the whole ending is done over drinks. Granted, in the movie, Bill is much less likable, but it loses something for me to see him over he top.

Also the Three Inch Punch scene was a bit different in the movie than in the script, and frankly was handled better in the script. The way it's done here, it looks like the bride never finished her training, and failed all of his tests. Then she happens to get Pai Mei's most powerful and secretive attacks? In the script, her breaking of the board and her breaking of the coffin are simultaneous.

The Pai Mei scenes just had me grinning like a fool. That character just so rocks in ALL the movies he's in. :)

And now it's bedtime...about 1/2 of the way through Star Blazers....
