Just saw an episode of Wandering Son where the two trans-kids are recording their female voices, because puberty is coming, and their voices are about to drop. The sheer terror of "it's coming" just started the waterworks. I never had the presence of mind to record my own female voice before it became impossible to do. But seeing these kids, knowing it's coming, oh, man. It's crushing.

Do you feel Wandering Son gets it right? (I know it's fiction, not a documentary, of course.) I saw the first two episodes, and from an outside perspective (cis, non-Japanese) it seemed like they did the research, but I might not be the best judge. What do you think?

It's not quite my childgood, but I've noticed two types of transfolk. The ones who know, and the ones who didn't get it till they were told. I'm in the last category - I knew something was up, but I didn't know until I read about it in a encyclopedia.

It's a little "optimistic" (the main character already having a wig and going out in public at his age and appereantly at ease with his femininity), but the emotions of the trans kids hitting me where it hurts when I see them. I don't know how much this matches up with the "they already know" camp, but looking at the series from my age now, all I can say is these kids know, they know what's in store, and that's exactly how I'd feel if I'd known what I know now at their age.
