its usualy a fairy tale (ive seen adverts this year for snow white, cinderlla, and peter pan) with the male lead played by a girl, and someone being a panto daem, witch is a guy, usualy not a sutble one, dressed up like a woman, in quite huge dresses.
a typical panto will usualy include shouts of "its behind you" when someone is trying to sneek up on the hero, and "oh no it isnt" "oh yes it is" being shouted between stage and audence. also, when i went to panto, a bad guy would usualy go in to the audence and do someone in one of the boxes. there is much in the way of 4th walls
pantomimes are usualy a christmas thing. and they usualy attract B or C tier actors, tho some of the bigger ones will get some surprissingly good actors. but more usualy someone who used to be on eastenders.
Ah...I'd always considered what I knew as pantomime as Children's theatre. This is something new to me...and a few more Monty Python sketches make sense now!
