dolariPicked up #Robotech: Love Live Alive as a birthday gift to myself. If you're not a Robotech/Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada fan, I suggest moving on. :)
I've had the original #Mospeada OVA since the late 80s...Mospeada - Love Live Alive OVA is 45 minutes of concert footage interspersed with flashbacks. The English one is just over an hour and 15 minutes of recap, and just about 15 minutes of concert footage. I'm guessing it's because there's very little music in the American version compared to the Japanese. (It's nice to hear some of the Robotech Movie music over the credits, too).
The new footage does actually fill in an annoying gap between the second and third generations that desperately needed to be filled in. And it IS nice to see these guys again...the "reunion" scenes in the Japanese OVA are handled in silence...but the American one has them all bickering like old friends...something I thought that worked REALLY well. Also, I loved the intro and "outtro" trailers, as if LLA is Episode #86 of the series, and Shadow Chronicles is episode #87.
So, it's a mixed bag. I don't like that it's 1.25 hours of recap. But once you get past all the recap, the Robotech version handles the end much much better. Personally...I have to say I prefer the Japanese OVA over the English. But, looking at it as a 20 year old reunion show, where you haven't seen the New Generation episodes in a while, the English one is really well done. More music would have been nice...the updated versions from Michael Bradley's album would have been even nicer. :)
Also, Rook's Ride Armor is still as sexy in 2013 as it was in 1985. ;)
