Jun. 23rd, 2014 11:58 pmBeginning to think the economy is not going to change for people like me, so I've been contemplating a change in my future plans.
The property I own is mine, lock stock and barrel. But the original house I designed may simply be unaffordable in my lifetime. That said, I'm considering scaling down the house pretty dramatically. Not TinyHouse small, but much smaller nonetheless.
The idea would be to build an up-to-code version of a small Texas Hill Country German Fachwerk cabin. Fully modernized, but still a cabin. Its much smaller, much simpler, and, hopefully, much cheaper.
There's still issues I'd have to deal with. I only own a half acre of contiguous land. Kerr County wanted two acres before you could build. But that was 1982. It may have changed. Also, where the property is, there's a square footage requirement that the cabin may not meet. That's something that may be negotiable.
To be honest, even this house may be unaffordable. I've been living hand-to-mouth since the dot com bust thirteen years ago, and it shows no signs of getting better.
One way or another, though. I've still got one of the best views in Kerr County. I can just sleep in the car.
