Nov. 16th, 2014 05:11 amI never answered my own questions about stuff I missed from everywhere else I've moved away from (Texas, Pennsylvania, Washington and a little bit of British Columbia for garnish):
Texas:
-Good BBQ. I lived right down the way from Lockhart, TX, the BBQ Capital of the Universe. Once you've had that, everything else leaves you cold.
-Taco Cabana. Good Quick Convenient Fast Food Mexican. Can't get that outside of Texas.
-Tex Mex in General. Right up there with Taco Cabana, outside of Texas, the Mexican food is downright dissapointing.
-Whataburger and In-n-Out. Between these two behemoths of the Hamburger World, the only burger I really like is Jack in the Box. Couldn't get JITB in PA, but could in Washington.
-McDonald's Texas Homestyle Burger: The only McDonald's Burger I actually like.
-Czech Kolaches: Jelly in a little bowl of sweet sweet somewhat sourdoughy pastry.
-Czech Koblanskis: Some places have something close to this called Pigs in a Blanket or (shamefully) Kolaches. No. No. They're not Koblanskis.
-Authenticky German Food: Fredericksburg and New Braunfels specialities. Apparently Leavenworth in Washington has pretty good German food, so I need to check them out.
-Fried Chicken. Yeah, you can get it anywhere thanks to KFC, but KFC isn't Church's or Popeye's or even Bill Miller's.
Pennsylvania:
-Virtually any Pennsylvanian Dutch food. It's like eating at an Old Country Buffet except good. Tons of soups and casseroles that are just super rich and filling. Also: Noodley.
-Birch Beer. It's like a slightly more tart root beer. I used to drink this stuff by the gallon.
-Pot Pies. More casserole than meat pie, and so much the better for it. Try the ham.
-Amish Apple Pie. The Amish make the best apple pie in this sector of the Galaxy. Always go for the crumble top, and not the pastry top.
-Teaberry. Pennsylvanians love their teaberry. I've seen teaberry tea, teaberry ice cream and teaberry gum. I love it all but the tea. Oddly enough, you can enjoy teaberry from the most unlikliest of sources: Pepto-Bismol. Pepto is teaberry flavored (and teaberry colored...you should see how the ice cream looks!)
-Middleswarth Potato Chips. Middleswarth chips are rare even in PA. They're only in Central PA and the Harrisburg area, and are fantastic. Light, thin and crisp, the flavorings give it a very floury texture. Even the plain taste almsot buttery.
-Grinders. You can get a sub anywhere these days, but in PA, even the gas station subs are amazing.
British Columbia:
-Nanaimo Bars. Nanaimo Bars are incredibly wierd, but tasty, concoctions. Layer of chocolatey pie-filling-ish base, a layer of whipped cream, a layer of chocolate, a layer of hard shelled chocolate on top. sort of. Depends on where you go as they differ wherever you go in BC. Victoria's Nanaimo Bars are The Best.
-Poutine. Yeah. It's good.
-Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwiches. Montreal is nowhere near BC, but Frenchie's in Vancouver had them. I went there ONCE. I want very much to go back. It's like a regular brisket beef sandwhich, but the brisket seems almost vinegary and tart. So tasty.
-Maple Candy. Made from the blood of real Canadians.
-Coffee Crisp. Giant KitKat that tastes like coffee. Like an addict, this is the sole reason I'm moving back to Pacific Northwest.
-Potato Chips. Canadians have an even MORE diverse selection of potato chips than Pennsylvania. I've had General Tso's chips, greek yogurt chips, piri-piri chips, ketchup (which I could get in PA), and, my personal fave, Tandoori Chicken Doritos.
-Tim Hortons. IT'S TIM HORTONS, FOR CHIRSSAKES.
Washington:
-Teriyaki plates. Not just the teriyaku, which isn't anything like teriyaki anywhere else, but the little salad side with the sweet-tart dressing and chewy sushi rice. I prefer it with pork, and spicy. :9
-Chinese Food. The Chinese food in Seattle. Wow. The Worst place in Seattle is better than ANY of the best places anywhere else I've been (with the possible exception of King of Lemon Chicken in San Antonio).
-Any Asian foods. Did I say Chinese? I meant to add Korean to that. And Japanese. And Thai. And ANY FREAKING OTHER EAST ASIAN FOOD THAT HAPPENS TO BE IN TOWN.
-Flying Saucer Pizza. I mentioned Thai. Ever had a Thai pizza? They have 'em.
-Twede's Fifty Burger menu. They took off the Bombay Burger, which made me sad. But their other burgers are gigantic and tasty. Also: Twin Peaks original Rocking R diner. It really is a damned fine Cherry Pie.
-Nintendo's Mario Burger: No longer served, sadly, that was one helluva burger. Big, tasty, and full of so much deliciousness that it left you groggy for the second half of your shift.
