As we bring another Transgender Day of Remembrance to a close, remember that the violence does not end on the 21st. We are being killed every day.

Do what you can, on any level you can, to help make it end: Write a letter to a congressman, vote for a bill, tell a friend. We are being killed - and we must do anything and everything we can to stop it.

My student group (the feminist group) and the Gay Straight Alliance together held a candlelight vigil on the 20th. I read out a history of the event, another person read the names of some the victims (the ones who know about, that is) and another called for a moment of silence. One fellow student came right up to me, and he actually expressed grief over the impact of hearing the names of those who were killed. For me, we hold vigils and read names on this day to call attention to the violence we face, as well as do what we can to make sure that those who are lost are not forgotten.
