Reunion.com SUCKS. One, I was signed up in 2000 by a friend who was on the reunion committee for my high school...since then I've been inundated with spam from them, and a crapload of grief. I've tried to remove my name from their spam lists and whatnot. Especially since they're using my old name, and I hate geeting mail that says "HELLO, ::OLDNAME!::"
Saturday, I got an Email from them saying "You've got an EMail from a classmate!" So I decided to check it out...only to find that in order to get the Email, you needed to pay $36. So I tried to get some profile info from the "free" class listing - $36. As a matter of fact, basically all you could get was a free class listing (which put you on thier spam list) or pay $36 for eveything else.
Thankfully, I got the Email from someone else - someone who saw my first attempts at comics. Wonder what she thinks of the new ones.
Sunday
Most of the day was spent working on comics, with a side trip to the Alamo Drafthouse to see The Animation Show with Don Hertzfeldt and Mike Judge. It was a lot of fun, and really enjoyable, including the new Don Hertzfeldt flick, "Meaning of Life."
Unfortunately, Emily gave me some terrible news that has hung with me since. First, a Peruvian friend of hers, living in Canada had her house raided by The US Homeland Security. This is just a jurisdictional nightmare, but the woman, as far aswe know, had NO REASON to be investigated.
We also got news that Alexandria Tucker had killed herself.
Both these events put a serious damper on the evening. Especially since htey hit close to home with Emily.
After the animation show, and a long talk with Emily, I worked on comics:

Monday
After a quick run down to San Antonio for hormones, and a quick bite to eat, I hit Heubner Park to take a few pics of the what they've done with it so far.
I did find out that MY part of the area wasn't part of the park. So I tresspassed, and tooks some pics:

This was the area where I spent most of my time...I used to have picnics and do my homework here when it was dry. It was very nicely shaded and peaceful here, and I enjoyed coming here just to think.
The little trail system we had going back here divided everything into a West, Center and East trail, and a North Forest and South Forest. In the middle, the trails all merged in a barren area that was nothing but bedrock.
That's no longer the case. I took a quick walk down the West Trail since it seemed the most cleared (the East was completely grown over and the Center was always tough to walk through. I walked the West Trail for four years, always remembering to side step a small piece of barbed wire sticking up. Not so lucky fifteen years later:

After losing the West Trail several times and just trying my best to remember where I was I suddenly found myself the basin:

Or I should say, wha'ts left of the basin. In the pic, it looks like the East Trail is still passable on the far far far left, as is the center trail which goes right down the middle. If you look to the bottom left, you'll see bedrock. This whole area was like this, although now only a small portion is. It sems that the floods we'd had over the last 15 years left a nice thick layer of soil which now has a lot of overgrown grasses on it. A storm drain, which used to be level with the floor of the basin was now covered by six feet of packed soil. Nature has been busy.
I attempted to try and walk through the Center Trail because it was the one I was most used to only to find it simply doesn't exist anymore. The West Trail seems to still be there, mainly because that's the creekbed, and the East Trail is completely obliterated. So I followed the West Trail to the area directly behind the main storm drain. This area was always busy. In 1990, this area was very brushy with to main trails leading to the East Trail. In 2000, one of the homeowners had taken down their fence, cleared the scrub out and was using the area as an "extention" of their back yard.
In 2005, I was greeted with a really strange site:

Not only was even MORE area cleared out, but the fence had been put back up, a gigantic rock that was off to one side had been yanked up, and moved about fifty feet flat side up, and a giant cleared circle had been plowed into the ground.
To be honest with you, I didn't know WHAT was going on here. Wether I'd stumbles across a grove's circle, or just a miniature ATV track. Someone had been keeping very good care of the place. I'd love to know what it's for.
The trail from the storm draing to "The Point" (as my friend Mike called the area) was still alive and well, and BEAUTIFULLY taken care of as well (almost like an arched gate). Parts of the East Trail were visible, and for once, not only was the Center Trail there, it was EXACTLY as I remembered it:

I remembered this area from the crisscrossing roots on the ground. If you look carefully, you'll see a cleared area on the right, which took you to the East Trail, which is completely grown over. The trail running straight past that didn't exist at the time.
I continued down the trail, which eventually merged with what I remember as the West Trail all the way to the end, at a service alley, which hasn't changed much in the last 15 years at all:

After arousing the suspicions of some dogs, and scaring a kid back into her house, I decided it was time to gead back before someone called the police. I made my way back to the circle and took some video of it, walked back through the gate, and back to my truck.
From there, I took some pics of the Fredericksburg and Northern railroad, and came home.
And incredibly busy weekend....

Date: 2005-04-19 07:03 pm (UTC)I did connect with one or two people from my past. None of the connections lasted. Pretty predictable. If I wasn't important enough for them to keep in touch with me after we graduated, why would I be any more important to them now, twenty years later?
