Well. That was a thing, wasn’t' it?
I've often described the whole #myvanityfaircover phenomena as a tidal wave that Crystal and I were swept up in, hoping our surfboards wouldn't topple us over and drown us. As the submissions wind down to a dull roar, we've finally taken some time to look around, and see what that tidal wave has unleashed.
In the span of just over a week, this idea of "Where's MY Vanity Fair cover?" went from a casual mention to a house-mate, to an actual online movement, getting conversations started, getting media involved and getting people thinking. Lots of people thinking.
Many of those people have given Crystal and the credit for posing the question. But you were the ones who answered it: by making the covers, and allowing us to share them with the world. Transfolk are a reclusive bunch. Many of us have our mirrors covered at home, others shy away from cameras. A few rarely even venture out of their house.
But you took a few minutes of your day to create a cover worthy of a Vanity Fair magazine. To show the world who and what and why we are. That there are many of us, that we deserve respect, and that we have many more stories than are being told. You are the ones who deserve the credit.
We plan to keep harvesting submissions and news posts as long as they come. We should have something more substantial than a tumblr reblogging-account as well soon. But all good things must come to an end, and we are realistic about the eventual end of the hashtag. We're on Minute Fourteen of this Fifteen Minutes of Fame.
But now it's your turn. Keep the conversation going. Keep your image in their minds. Speak up when you feel you've been wronged, and applaud the people who get it right.
