It can happen. And, ultimately, I suppose there's not really anything we can do about it - now and then, there will be people whose purpose in life is to.. deposit unpleasantness. (Viz any of the Republican clown car, who seem engaged in a battle to be the most xenophobic, anti-science, non-het-hating)
But you'll also meet folks you'll know for years after you part ways, and remain perpetually thankful for that initial encounter. ^_^
