It's a bizarre decision, no two ways - it would've been perfectly feasible for them to maintain at least functional support, even if they'd have to tell buyers that there'd be nothing new coming down the pipe for them. But turning the device into a paperweight? There'll be some legal repercussions, I'd imagine (and hope), with some countries having consumer protection legislation requiring devices to have a reasonable lifespan - which, for a thermostat, is not going to be three years in anybody's reasonable estimation.

But with Nest now borged by Google, I wouldn't touch them anyway - I can't trust their attitudes toward privacy when their entire business model, like Facebook, is based around surveillance and advertising.
