Posted this in response to a news story running around on Facebook. Figured I'd post it here as well.

A few weeks ago a friend told me she wanted to buy a Mexican Day if the Dead dress, but felt it would insult me as cultural appropriation. And while I do believe in the damage of cultural appropriation phenomenon (St. Patrick's Day wasn't ask about drinking alcohol), I'm also not very strict about it.

Do you know the meaning behind the Mexican Day of the Dead? Do you know about Catrina and St. Death? Yes? You can wear the dress.

If you're answer is no...are you willing to learn about it? Understand why it means something? What it means to Mexican families! Yes? Wear the dress.

If you're answer is still no...well...I won't confront you about it. But you're probably being a jerk....

Relatedly, what did you make of 2014's animated feature, "The Book of Life"? My perspective's going to be quite different to yours, so I can't really speak of how well the roots of the story sit; as a film, though, I absolutely loved it.

I really enjoyed the movie. It really captured the idea of death as a celebration, and not a mourning. The story was not quite authentic, but at least in the "right style" and even I recognized LA Muerte as my culture's La Calavera Catrina. I gave it a big thumbs up.
