Help me, Doctor Internet:

Looking for the name of a book I read years ago about a boy and his father who go visit their mother in a town far away from civilization. I remember specifically that the villiage or town was surrounded by fog that closed in on them as they were driving. Once their, the boy realizes his mother is an alien.

Any ideas?
