Comics Updated!

As you may have noticed, today's comic is completely unfinished, and the quality of the previous sets of comics have been REALLY questionable as of late. Well, there are reasons....

Over the last few months, my job has gotten more and more "filled" with work. When I first started, I had hours and hours where I was drawing my comics overnight. But the work and reports had piled way up week after week, and I was barely having any time to finish the comics.

Now, I'm at work, and they're giving me money to answer their phones and not draw comics. So I made a few changes to the way I draw to make it easier to do their work AND mine, including reducing the panel size of the originals from one panel per page, to six panels per page. Given some time and tweaking this could have worked better than it has.

About two or so months ago, one of my overnight coworkers was let go (Hi, Bryan!). Instead of allowing him to work out his last week to find a replacement, he was let go immediately, and we were told to start working 50 hour weeks until further notice. This meant that my free Saturdays were now gone, and I had Sunday only to do comics for Monday

I did my best but as we've seen, the comics have had intermittent missing weeks or have been of REALLY questionable quality. To be honest, I'd seen this coming, and went into two storylines where the art style would drastically change. Closetspace went into a simpler art style for a dream sequence, and AWFW was going to go into an cave-painting artstyle.

Unfortunately, with the 50 hour weeks, I wasn't able to pull it off, and my lead time on the comics got MUCH shorter. At work, this last week was completely brutal to the point that there was simply no time to even SCRIPT the comics in my head, much less draw them.

This week, it all finally caught up with me, and instead of taking off ANOTHER week of comics, I've elected to post the sketched pencils of the comic. It'll be finished sometime the week, possibly even tomorrow. Why?

Because I've quit my job. And for the next few weeks, I'll be resting and recuperating and drawing. So look for better quality comics coming soon.

In the meantime, that tip jar sure could use some loose change.

::hugs::

I missed you by less than ten minutes this morning, dear heart. I wish I'd been there to reassure you and tuck you into bed. Soon, soon.

::hugs some more::

I have to say, I admire your dedication to your art...I once had a dream of drawing comics, that just seems to have faded over time (I still sketch, but so far haven't done any new finished work since 1999...pathetic, I know...) I have been considering maybe setting up an online comic, if for no other reason, to encourage myself to draw more...although other times I wonder if I am just kidding myself...I still like drawing, but my inspiration needs a jump start. I have a lot of other things I need to think about right now, so my drawing ends up being put on the back burner...I'm sorry to ramble on here...

I felt the same way once upon a time. In 1992, I went through some tough times with a comic company I was a part of, and basically told: "Don't quit your day job."

I didnt draw a singlt thing from 1992 to 2000 or so. I thought about it, but never much more than just a thought. Then in 2001 I got laid off, and had time to spare, so I started webcomics.

Don't give up...vacation if you need to, but don't give it up.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about the quality of your comic at the moment. I mean, it is important, if only for your own piece of mind to do it to the best of your abilities but when all the rest of your life is crowding in on you then something has to give. Those of us who are your fans will be more than willing to give you the benefit of the doubt or even wait a while if you decide you need to take a bit longer before updating.

Congratulations on quitting your job - I know how incredibly satisfying it is to be able to jack in a job that you have come to loathe (I did myself earlier this year). Relax and enjoy yourself for a while. And then, like Tharg the Mighty (sorry, British comic book reference...) chain yourself back to your desk!

Ellen.
