I am no longer funked. :)

I have been a fan of Suzanne Vega for a little over a decade, thanks to Amy, and have missed her last two appearances (one due to other obligations, one because, I just plain missed her), but managed to get to see her this time at the One World Theater.

Allow me to say, the One World Theater is AMAZINGLY cool. The exterior is done to look like an old Spanish Hacienda, has a great view of the hill country, and the world's scariest balconies. We will be moving in shortly.

Knowing full well it might be a while before she comes back to Austin (Three times in the four years may seem pretty often, but when you've missed her two of those three times), I went ahead and decided to bring my sketch book to get some poses while she was onstage. This was not my best thought out idea. It was HARD to see that darn thing in the dark ligthing, and could only really sketch when the lights on the stage turned yellow or orange. She doesn't move much, so there were only two poses I got (one playing her guitar, one standing and singing). I also got a pose of the world's best posed Bass Player (it's hard to look like you're rocking out to a Suzanne Vega song, but he did it).

The music was wonderful, and it felt REALLY "unplugged" too. It was just her guitar and the bass players guitar and that's it. No other backing and only one real "effect" I heard through the whole set. She explained some of the music, and it's neat to hear how deep some songs are, and how other's are just what they say they are ("Solitaire" is literally about playing solitaire). What's funny is, I couldn't help looking at her singing on stage and seeing Nikki or Carrie up there. They all really do look scarily alike.

For an hour and a half, I thoroughly enjoyed some kick ass music. :)

We went downstairs and I had her sign my sketchbook near the ball and socket pose I'd made and got Mike Viscegla's autograph as well by his. I mentioned to the sound guy that I was part of the Suzanne Vega discussion board, so we were allowed to hang around after the CD signing for about thirty minutes, just jabbering about life the unverse and everything with other members of the board for a half hour. One of the highlights of the evening was being able to tell her that she was the prime inspriation for Carrie's music, and that if the music was based on her, then the posing should be based on hers.

You know, for someone who does all this mysterious music and lyrics couched in enigmas, she's really down to earth and funny. When she left, I asked her back sooner, and then I went home, in a WONDERFUL mood.

And that's all anyone can ask out of a Friday Night. :)

I love the One World Thater. However, I'm glad they seem to realize it's a great venue for individuals, or smaller groups.

Marca and I saw Little Feat, a loud, partying raucous band of about 11 people there. I heard nothing except noise.

That is SO cool!

I've loved her music since I heard it on WXPN in Philadelphia, which is the station that produces World Cafe with David Dye. Back in the early 1990's it was like have World Cafe 24 hours a day. And Suzanne Vega was featured frequently :) This is officially a Good Thing!

I have big time envy that you got to see her live. That is SO cool!

Hugs!

Very cool. Suzanne Vega's quite good - not that she's necessarily in my top 10, but I do appreciate her musicianship. And next time you're in a funk, I hope it's because you've got some George Clinton or Tower of Power cued up... :)

::hugs tightly::

I'm glad that you had a great time and the funk has lifted. Live music has truimphed once again over the evil forces of depression. I wish I could have been there to lend a helping hand in it, but there's always a next time.

::hugs again and sings "My Favourite Plum" into your ear::

Maybe I need to look into this. I first heard of the name after I gave up listening to now music altogether circa 1990.
