Over the last few weeks, I've kind of been perusing newspapers from the 1880s of the old home-town of Locke Hill. After I exhausted that, I tried looking up old roads in the same papers. Not much about Babcock Road other than learning about an old ranch in the area. Huebner Road was much the same. I know more about the history of those roads and namesakes than I could get out of the paper.

Then I looked up Bandera Road. That road in the 1850s up to the the 1900s was a DANGEROUS road. If it wasn't flooding, it was highway men, it wasn't them, it was "Indian depredations" (I'm a little skeptical at the objectivity of the newspapers of the time, this was the road into Comancheria after all). And if you take the road as it is today (which was, for the most part, the same road you have today) you can see why it was so dangerous. Even today, the terrain around rural parts of Texas 16 is pretty rugged, and the hill from IH-410 down into Leon Valley ("Eightmile Hill") was a perfect vantage point for robbers watching for folks driving to SA from Bandera, back in the day.

What's funny is Liz's and Jonathan's step dad telling me stories about the Comanches who would hide up in the Grey Forest area in caves just off the Bandera Road. I wonder if they're the same ones in the papers?
