dolariTwenty things I've learned as a Texan from my extended time in British Columbia, Canada:
1) Don't ever EVER say "Fifty First State." I was just talking about how Americans sometimes see Canada as that, and someone threw a Loonie at me from across the room. Seriously.
2) Flashing Green signals are a thing. They're pedestrian crossings controlled by lights. Good luck crossing one in a car if you're not on the street controlled by the light.
3) Most everyone hates Quebec.
4) But Quebec has awesome religious based swear words. Tabarnak! Baptême! Câlice!
5) Most everyone just feels kinda sorry for Americans, but are delighted to meet one. Especially one that says "Y'all."
6) Dollar coins are awesome, but their TWO dollar coins are awesomer.
6A) Canadian money DOESN'T smell like maple syrup, contrary to popular (American) belief.
6B) They're called Loonies and Toonies. No one tell Warner Brothers.
7) Victoria is more British than Britain.
8) They pronounce "Decal" as "Deckle" not "DEEkal."
9) Corner Gas is the best comedy show I've ever seen that manages to completely stay 99.95% family friendly doing it.
10) Trailer Park Boys is the best comedy show I've ever seen that manages to completely stay 0.05% family friendly doing it.
11) Hockey in Canada = High School Football in Texas minus stealing the opposing teams school mascot.
12) When you realize that curling is just Marbles for Adults, it's a lot of fun.
13) It's "pu-tin" not "pou-teen." I'm guilty of this one.
14) I still feel wierd pronouncing "Regina." I think they do, too.
15) They're some of the nicest people I've met outside of the Texas Hill Country.
16) Timmie's. OH MY GOD, TIMMIE'S.
17) I've seen more "San Antonio Shoes" stores in Vancouver than I have anywhere else. And I'm from San Antonio.
18) I've never seen The Littlest Hobo, but the theme song gets stuck in my head ALL the time. Thanks Hank.
19) The National mentions that they monitor "Credible News Sources" when talking about breaking American News. Wink wink.
