The From then on Forth strip has really kicked my ass. The FTOF strip had one advantage over the Triquetra Cats strip in that it didn't have a script, and I was allowed to turn in anything. Unlike the TC strip, though, I just couldn't figure out what to do with this.
It boiled down to a crossover idea. Carrie meets Rachel. But I frown on these things, so how could I get Carrie into FTOF without messing up a "universe."
Easy - make it "after work." When the actress who plays Carrie is done with her day. If Carrie got off work, so did other characters. And what if those characters who were TS, were REALLY TS outside of work? Well, if they were following the Standards of Care, they'd all be going to therapy.
So what if there was one that catered to TS comic actors? Talk about the crossover possibilities! So I decided to make it happen - they'd be at therapy together. That's about as far as it really got.
So now I had Carrie and Rachel together, and a place where all sorts of camoes could occue. But the only creator I knew personally was Erin Lindsey, who graciously allowed me to use Zoe in the From then on Forth comic.
You'd think with Rachel, Carrie and Zoe, we'd have a great comic. But...well...it just wasn't happening. I've been under the gun with these guest comics all asking around the same time - that I really couldn't concentrate on dialogue for this. We had general intros, then maybe a "Gush over each other's comics" which I didn't like, then we tried "jab at each others comics" but that was against Rachel's personality, I tried a number of jokes and plot lines and nothing came together.
Eventually, I said "screw it" and drew a generic "meet up" comic, two reaction shots, and the final panel. I figured once they were colored and ready for typesetting, I'd have something concrete.
Nothing doin. Up to the point where I was lettering, I had no idea what I wanted. So I went with the "Gushing" strip, but turned the volume on it way down. I added a couple of jabs at other TS comics, and a slightly modified Zoe gag (originally she was calling us "freaks" for gabbing on about our comics, instead now the joke is that no one recognized her).
I'm unsatisfied with it. But deadlines loom. At least the TC comic has a script and the Venus Envy comic I already know what I'm gonna do with it.
