Apr. 5th, 2019 04:34 pmThe thing about Texas is...I know it's history backwards and forwards. I know the big places in San Antonio and Austin. I know the little places. I've stood on forgotten battlefields between Texas Rangers and Natives. I've poked around buildings that were on the verge of collapse just so I could get a taste of life in the 1880s. I've visited townsites that haven't existed in decades. I know Texas. I am proud to know Texas. And I've stood up for Texas.
...even when it doesn't stand up for me. In fact, in rarely has. And every legislative session that goes by, I feel more and more alienated from a government that is very vocal that it hates my ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and political affiliation. Usually voted there by the very same people I smile and and am friendly to (and they to me), because their religious leaders are in the pockets of Republican party and have convinced them that God is on the Republican side.
It's good to go home, even if it's just for a month. Knowing where Edge Falls is means squat in Washington State. Google Maps sightseeing isn't the same as being there. Telling people that Real County is the "Real Hill Country" means nothing to my friends here. But each time I go back, it's a little harder to stay as I feel I'm being legislated out of existence there.
I love my home. I wish it loved me. There are a lot of things keeping me out of The State of Texas. One of them is the state of Texas. Another is The State of Texas.
