Rita's a'comin.
As a matter of fact, many of the local weather reports she'll pass JUST east of here. One went so far as to say they think Rita will drop from Category 1 to Tropical Storm around La Grange or Smithville, some 40 miles east of here.
And...to be honest...it's taking all my willpower not to get a room in La Grange or Smithville.
Why? Cause I've always been fascinated by weather. I've been through the brunt of Hurricane Gilbert (31 Tornadoes, one of which clipped a house a few hundred yards from mine. I've been in 80 mile an hour winds (a freak thunderstorm in 1993), and 24 inches of rain in 24 hours (1998 San Antonio Flood). I used to chase thunderstorms all over Central Texas (a the first sign of a tornado, though, I turn tail and run...I'm not COMPLETELY insane.)
I'm prolly gonna stick around. I've got a shitload of matches, and candles around here. Enough dry food (lots of ramen and pastas), a shortwave radio with fresh batteries and my Laptop, if used conservatively, can run on it's batteries for two or three days. I'm up on a high hill (which I dread everytime I go bike riding), so I'm not worried about flooding.
My only real fear is that the wind might do something to the roof of the apartment. At my last apartment (in the same complex), the roof would "flap" and "bang" with a good stiff winter wind. This one doesn't do anything wierd, however if a good stiff wind blows by the apartment, it somehow gets in our vents, and you can FEEL it in the rooms.
Now if for some reason this becomes an incredibly dangerous hurricane, I plan to run off to my property in Center Point some 80 miles west of here. I have enough gas to get there, again, plenty of food, radio and so on. I think there're even some MREs still in the truck. It's on very high ground (although I might not be able to get out for a day or two if there's some severe flooding).
So, I'm looking forward to the storm. I've always wanted to go through one, and everytime I went from Texas to Penna, a hurricane would hit the state I wasn't in. I'm definately wanting to see this one. :)
