Had a dream last night that I'd died in a building collapse. I remember feeling someone pulling my arm and me "phasing" through the rubble.
Turns out, I not only had died, but I had gotten trapped "between planes." My rescuer told me that when people die, they usually just disperse or go to heaven or whatever is beyond (they don't really know cause no one comes back).
Being stuck between planes meant that I had died, and was non-corporeal, but still stuck on Earth. I asked him for more info, but he said there really wasn't time, and we'd talk later. He pulled me into a yellow box that several others had set up nearby and pushed me inside. Inside were several other people. The door immediately opened up and a ferw more "people" were shoved in. The door would close and immediately open up again. Finally, the door opened for the last time in what seemed like thirty seconds since I got thrown in and the same rescuer said "It's okay now, you can come out."
We come out and he explains that the box is a stasis box. Time's frozen inside, and it's important that when there's a major disaster like an earthquake or in this case a building collapse, that we get saved as quick as possible because scavengers come to take newly killed souls and consume them. They're not hard to fight, and in fact, are fairly easy to push back - but they can't be killed, and they prey on newly (and confused) dead.
We come back to the collapsed building. "We got everyone we could, but a few didn't make it. The rest went wherever the dead go when they're actually sent to wherever they go." He explained that there aren't really any rules on this plain. Since spirits don't eat or sleep, there's no real fighting for resources (outside of basically shooing off the scavengers who are looking for easy prey). Because of that, this is pretty much limbo - you're just here waiting. "Most spirits dissapear eventually, hopefully to wherever they were supposed to go. Could be hours, could be centuries. In the meantime, sit back, relax, and enjoy the time off. Everything on Earth is available to you, albeit as a non-corporeal entity. Please don't interact too much with the living, it scares them."
And it's a kind of peace that comes over me. I'm dead. But still alive. And just, hanging around. For a few weeks or a few millenia. Just kinda enjoy that.
I ask who built the stasis boxes and he said they're here and they're all over. They're not sure who built them, but some of the souls believe the scavengers built it before they were scavengers. Or maybe some people who actually lived on the plane. They're all over, though, and portable, so they're used to protect newly stuck souls before the scavengers get to them.
We get back to the collapsed building, and it's a mess. I ask if I can help next time this happens. He says "Keep your ears open, I'll call you if it does. In the meantime, take a few months off and relax. It's pretty quiet around here."
