There's a thread on Twitter from the [profile] dsa_cleveland about worst work experiences you've ever had. There were two jobs I consider the worst jobs I've ever had and both are why I'm willing to stay places that may not pay much, but treat me well.

One of the reasons I loved Nintendo and DNP was they made me into a better employee and taught me not to put up with this kind of shit.

JOB 1 - A retailer in San Antonio

1) Boss was a jerk. Kept calling me stupid, and an idiot and how glad I should be that he gave me a job when no one else would. He did this with ALL his employees, and we had to listen to him pontificate about what a good boss he was to hire such dumb people.

2) After buying a lot of smashed boxes full of discount window cleaner, he had me go through them looking for broken containers, and pour out any remaining cleaner into a local stream. That stuff was caustic, burned my fingers, and likely were a disservice to the environment.

3) Our store was often empty. If the we cleaned up the store, and there were STILL no customers, we were told to go into the back warehouse area and move boxes from one end of the warehouse to the other. And when we were done, move them back. "I'm not paying you to sit around."

JOB 2 - A tech support company in Austin

1) Actual line during my interview: "You'll be working four 10 hour days, and have a one hour unpaid lunch. Successful employees will work through that, if you understand my meaning."

2) Our manager had daily QAs which were always ALWAYS bad. Even if he had to really dig for it. Everyone called it "The Daily Spanking." When it came time for raises, we were usually told "How do you deserve a raise with all these bad reviews?"

3) After repeated quitting by our overnight team, I went from four ten hour days to five to six and to seven. I was told point blank I would only be paid 40 hours a week because they couldn't afford to pay me the 70 hours AND overtime. When I complained, they said "We'll bank it and pay it out as we can over time." I quit a month later, and, to their credit, they paid my full amount by telling me "Don't quit for a few months, just stay home, and we'll keep paying you till we've paid you out." Although that may have had something with me going to pay-day law on Job 1 when that company owed me $500 and not being afraid to do that again.

Why did I take this crap? Because getting a job as a transwoman in the early 2000s in Texas was a miracle. If I needed to punch a baby to keep a job, I likely would have done it. Thankfully, it was much easier to be humiliated.
