So, I was kind of lucky. Between 1997 and 1999, I was unemployed and used the time to work on my transition slowly. The downside was, the job I did get knew me as guy.
By the time I'd applied for the job, I'd had my name change, and was already living as a woman, so my application was me coming out to them as a woman, as it had my new name on it, and I was present as a woman when I did.
I did get the job...but...they specifically asked that I present male for the probationary period. They were worried that if I was fired, I'd claim it was discrimination. I didn't think to bring up that Kinko's already had trans policies in place. I was hurting for money, and went with it. So I worked for the first 90 days as a guy.
Then flipped the switch on March 6th back to presenting as a woman. The job was fine with it. Apparently there was a big meeting before the day I flipped back so everyone was ready and pretty amazing about it.
It was mostly the regulars who had questions, but most everyone was great. A few were not. And complainers were shown the door.
