Jun. 18th, 2021 03:35 am30 Questions For Pride Month, Day 18: Is there anything you experienced as a trans person that you wish you'd approached differently?
Yes. Absolutely. I wish I'd listened.
Every single time, pre-transition, that I dismissed a complaint, that I talked over a woman, that I didn't LISTEN.
After I'd told Steph I was transitioning, she bought full in. I was a woman, she was going to treat me like a woman, and I was going to be in women's spaces with her, and women's conversations.
And I found out a friend, who I'd also come out to, had been raped. Like the night before. And we all had to help her through this. And we did our best between class periods, because SHE WAS STILL EXPECTED TO BE AT SCHOOL.
For me, this was the first time I'd been brought into this as a woman. It was the first time I really had to realize "This happens." That everything that's said...it's not just talk, it's not something to dismiss or ignore. Things fucking happen. All the indignities and assaults and you have to deal and work through, and part of that is the struggle that people won't believe it.
It was the first of many lessons. But an important one:
LISTEN TO WOMEN.
