The people of Texas have spoken on Prop. 2...which is rather sad. Given the climate in The State of Texas, and the United States, both will soon lose a citizen over this. Thankfully, my love is in Canada where Same Sex Marriage is legal. I'm just very sorry that will make it near impossible to show her the state I love and used to call home.

I used to believe in writing to my elected officials, patting them on the back when they did good, and scolding them when they did bad. But I found myself scolding them more than patting them on the back. And after a while, I began to feel like I was spitting into the wind when it came to Texas Politics. This is the first (and more'n'likely the last) letter I've written to these positions since 1996, when I left for Pennsylvania.

Why bother writing the President? You know just as well as I do that he can't read.

In seriousness, though, that really blows...as long as fundamentalist Christian mullahs keep their grip on the hearts and minds of the common red-stater, gay marriage will remain out of legal reach.

I hear that Canada kicks ass, though.

Being a limey, I had to go looking for this 'Prop 2' and I did love one argument I saw...

"The constitutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of the union of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage."

Someone pointed out that, technically, that ammendment could be seen to prohibit the recognition of marriage itself; since marriage is "identical or similar to marriage".

I really can't see what the point of that law was...

There really wasn't a point. Texas already has a law that says "NO GAY MARRIAGE!" Adding it to the Texas Constitution was just a way to keep the law from being unconstitutional. It's a LOT harder to declare a state constitutional amendment unconstitutional.

It's more of a delaying tactic if any "activist judges" decide that the regular law should be thrown out.

Marriage is illegal in Texas:

Apparently the wording makes all marriages illegal.

Now if they would just enforce the All Marriages are Illegal portion of that.
