The interview went SPECTACULARLY. The company is cool, the people are cool, the are they're in is cool. Everything about it is cool, and rocks and all sorts of happy adjectives. The bad news is, I'm one of about 60 applicants and won't know anything good or bad for a long while yet. But I'm pretty sure I got to the second round of interviews, whenever that is.

I learned to make a new noise today. You'll have to figure out which one.

k1tana: I've had to deal with "artistic prima donnas" before.
k1tana: Webcomics are like the Rocky Horror Picture Show Floor Shows.
k1tana: Marvel and DC publish comics - that's on the screen.
k1tana: Webcomics - we're the ones acting out in front of the movie.
k1tana: The prima donnas are the one who feel the floor show is more important than the movie.
k1tana: The ones that don't care and have fun - those are the cool guys in the troupe. :) The ones who do it cause it's fun, not to feed the ego. And to prance around in lingerie.

I'm not one of the prima donnas, but I do think the floro show is more important. Mostly because we get to people tell the stories they want without balless editors and executives getting in the way. Plus, you don't see the ridiculous whored out nonsense like Megamorphs and whatever DC's answer to it was.

Thus why I like indy stuff anyway. ^_^*

I can't say I entirely agree with the analogy, just 'cause I don't see webcomics (or indy comics, for that matter) as being on all that much lower a level as "mainstream" comics. In several ways, I think indy comics actually have a better idea, as far as using the medium to its fullest extent (like that superheroes aren't the *only* thing comics should do).

I do think a "floor show" version of comics exist, but I think of them more as the fan-fic or parody comics that are out there...the people who write stories directly referencing the Marvel or DC characters.

I kind of agree, had I been either a bit more awake or spent a bit more time on it I would have picked apart the analogy. ^_^*

I like webcomics because it's a lot easier to get your work out there and gives you almost total control over what content you put in it, whereas someone like Marvel or DC would regulate your comic, remove things that might be controversial, etc. Another thing I like is that you can practically say and do whatever you want, which is the greatest benefit of not having an editor. Half of the stuff I make my characters say and some of the situations that happen would cause me to be stabbed in the face by any editor. :)

It goes both ways but. It's the same thing as major record labels vs artists releasing on mp3.com. The labels do the job of sifting out the crap and polishing the good stuff. Granted, some people might not agree with their choices, but overall i find you're often better off going with the corporate-backed stuff simply because it's better quality on average. Now and then you'll find a self-published gem and that's fantastic, but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Different media, different problems. However if you want the problem with corporate backed comics, I give you Marvel Megamorphs (http://www.toyglobe.com/MegaMorph.php), because Ghost Rider and the Hulk need giant robots to pilot, not to mention sell the toys (it was a comic).

Plus there's the corporate sponsorship which has become irritating in many comics. (The New X-men title with the Hellions features a scene where Rockslide gets to live his dream as a pro wrestler, in the background are the usual sign wielding yahoos that watch pro wrestling. One of these signs is an advert for one of the anti-smoking campaigns).

Sure it only exists to sell toys, but i don't see the big deal. So did Jem and the Holograms, He-Man, Transformers etc. and it didn't make them completely devoid of entertainment value to me as a kid. Sean McKeever is a great writer and i suspect the Megamorph books are probably some of the funnest stuff Marvel's put out lately.

As far as sponsorship goes - same thing. Product placement is all over TV, movies, etc. but it doesn't magically make a good movie bad to my eyes.

I think if there's anything to complain about with the "big two" it's that they tend to not take as many chances as the indie comics publishers. But my point still stands because the indie comics publishers are providing a crap-filtering service too. If you pick an indie publisher who fits your tastes you know pretty much everything they release will be something you enjoy (same as with indie record labels).

Like i said before, i don't think all self-published stuff is crap. There's some great stuff out there, and you're right - at least the artist gets to say whatever he wants... but because of the lack of editors a lot of mediocre stuff remains mediocre and a lot of truly awful stuff still sees "print". And yes it's freedom of speech, it's artists getting directly in touch with their fans, it's a really cool thing. I love webcomics. I just feel it's much harder to find ones of a consistent standard than it is when you look at published stuff.

Ditto. The comic I'm trying to get back to doing could be interpreted as insulting to so many demographics of people that it'd never get made by one of the big two. They don't have the guts for it.
