When they first started, they had the rights to the whole Doctor Who series from 1963 to 1989 but gave them up very quickly (BBC charges an arm and a leg for them).
Now they have a contract for the new 2005 series, which makes me incredibly happy.
...you never got it on free-to-air over there. In Australia it's always been shown on the ABC, which is our equivalent of the BBC. At first it was on every Saturday evening, and then they'd show repeats 6pm Monday-Friday (Friday was always something else). The new season, with Christopher Eccleston was shown here last year in the Saturday timeslot and was very well received I think.
Ah, I remember growing up ith Dr Who and Star Trek in the sixties - still have a soft spot for both.
When they were on Channel 2 in Boston (Public Televison). And how the music and the end credits (hurtling through dark tunnel with bright dirty light at the end) both thrilled and scared me both.
It may be a function of how old I was, but my "favorite" Doctor was Tom Baker. Loved his scarf. He seemed a bit shabby chic to me.
Having said that I am very happy to see Christopher Eccleston as Dr. Who. (He's a bit in Danny Boyle's troupe and some other random stuff - Shallow Grave, 28 Days Later)

Ah, but we did! In fact, in my hometown, they showed Doctor Who everynight at 10:30, Monday through Friday in episode format. At first they only showed Tom Baker era episodes, and then a run or two of Tom Baker/Peter Davidson episodes. But the last run in episode format showed ever existing story KLRN had, from An Unearthly Child right up to Caves of Androzani.
Then the BBC started charging an arm and a leg for reruns, and KLRN couldn't afford anymore episodes...
...until we asked how much it cost for the rights to One Last Run of Episodes in 1989. IT was really really really expensive, but the San Antonio fan club got together with one in Austin and another in Corpus Christi and raised the cash to pay for one run of the cheapest package Lionheart TV had to offer. The idea was to buy as many episodes for one airing we could afford, record them on VHS, and pass them around to make sure everyone had their own personal copies of the episodes. We managed to buy everything from Spearhead from Space up to Silver Nemesis. When KLRN saw what we were doing, they paid for the last season. :)
Wasn't free but LPB (Louisiana Public Broadcasting)used to showed Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, MST3K and Blake's Seven. All on like friday (or was it saturday?) night. Had to pull them due to funding issues.
Had I lived in your area at the time, I would never have left my house with that kind of programming in one night. I would've become LPB's best friend. You just named four of my favorite shows!
