On the tenth anniversary of Star Trek Voyager, I would like to ask the eternal question:

Did that show really suck or was I just spoiled on DS9?

I think you just need to be in the zone to get it. My roommate loves all the Treks, but he loves Voyager the most. (Well, barring Enterprise, but that hasn't hit DVD yet so it doesn't count.) It's all self-contained and fairly predictable, but all Treks are like that really. It's just harmless fun i think.

Oy. I wonder if they're on region 4 yet. My roommate tends to start buying the seasons when they get under around $60 during the specials. None of the networks have picked it up for syndication here either, so so far i've only seen season 1. I really dug it, i thought it was a lot more "real" than the other Treks, and the characters were really likeable. Plus the CGI is better. Be cool to see the rest of it.

I mean, they turned into salamanders when they went over warp 10. I mean, really. We're talking 'H.R. Puffinstuff' plots here.

I wouldn't say it sucked, but it wasn't most peoples cup of tea. I thought Kes was cute, but they replaced her with Seven who is "sexy" ... yes appealing to the MALE demographic obviously all trek nerds are huh?

I like how it was resolved though, Admiral Janeway pretty much said fuck the temporal prime directive. Destroy the borg at the same time. Voila, no more need for any more startreks.

Actually the first episode that the Timeship appears in, with the jump back to the first episode I was totally confused, thinking i was watching a rerun briefly.

I wouldn't mind seeing a show that plausably explored time travel ala star trek, but it's a very complicated thing to do. Or even something based on mirror-mirror as a special.

The concept was brilliant.

The execution sucked. I still don't see how the ship could have stayed in such pristine shape after all that shit. I was expecting it to degenerate to something along the lines of that one ship that they encountered five to six years in. The continuity was not really followed. And they REALLY pussyfied the Borg.

I agree the concept was something that they could have potential. But I noticed right away it started falling down when the crew, even the ones from the Maquis were drop outs from Starfleet that were described as "some of the most promising students that just messed up somehow". Really, when you set up something like that there's not much room for development.

I joked with a friend during the first season that the series finale should have been this: They finally make it home and it took all 70 years they estimated. Kes, the alien that was only supposed to have a lifespan of 7 years, but agreed to help the crew, somehow survives unaged. Most of the crew has died of old age and Janeway, sitting in the command chair taking her last breaths as Earth comes into view hears Kes say to the holographic doctor "Earth sucks. I want to go home."

I still can't figure out why I bothered to watch it when it was on.

The first few years of Voyager were fairly yawn-worthy, but I remember being impressed later on, especially the last couple of seasons. Maybe without the much better DS9 to grab my attention it seemed better, or maybe it just improved towards the end. Dunno.

I loved Voyager (much more than DS9, in fact); but MAN did it go downhill in the last season.
