Sometimes I worry a lot. I worry a whole lot. I am willing to talk to anyone at anytime about (mostly) anything. But when I talk to a Muslim in another country who asks me my opinion of our country...I am afraid to give it. Not because I'm afraid of saying my opinion. But because I am afraid my government is watching, and will punish me for saying that I disagree with my government. I worry that one day I'll be on a no-fly list, simply because I don't like where we are headed. I worry that one day I'll be denied an exit from the country, because I disagreed with my government.

I worry. I won't stop. But I worry.

Just responding 'I don't feel comfortable telling you my opinion' isn't damning per se...but it will tell the other person all they need to know.

kwim?

Nope. I will say my opinion because we're supposed to be able to say our opinions. I'm not gonna lose my right to free speech over a little worry....

::nod:: I recently started to correspond with an Iranian pro-GLBT organization that is, amongst other things, interested in hosting a Transgender Day of Remembrance in Tehran. That said, now every time I write them, I wonder who is watching, and become very cautious of my words.

Cheers,
Gwen Smith

That's not the first I've heard about Trans folk in Iran. I find it strange that M2F of all things is accepted over there....

::nod:: Definitely more accepting that many others in the region and -- in some ways -- more accepting than the States.

Kinda sad, that.

KPFT sounds like the exact equal and opposite of WWCR. :D

Anyway, KPFT has the remains of the old transmitter in the stairwell between first and second floors as a reminder, and my name on a list of former associates. And they'd let just about ANYone on their airwaves.

Proof of that last sentence: I've appeared as a guest on KFPT before, not once, but twice.

I forget who said it, but this put it best:

"In a dictatorship, the people are in fear of the government. In a democracy, it's the other way around."

Freedom flows from the open wounds of those who will never experience it.

Denied exit? I'd have thought that Dubya would personally hold the airplane door just to make sure you didn't come back to "pollute" his "pure" homeland.

Say your say. Free speech was still in the US consitiution the last time I looked. And if it isn't, smarthost yourself from a Canadian IP and thumb your nose at them, or better yet, get bulletproof hosting from the Chineese like the spammers do. Then you'll have both free speech and a delicious doae of irony : )
