My grandmother came from Russia
A satchel on her knee,
My grandfather had his father's cap
He brought from Italy.

They'd heard about a country
Where life might let them win,
They paid the fare to America
And there they melted in.

Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
Is the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.

America was founded by the English,
But also by the Germans, Dutch, and French.
The principle still sticks;
Our heritage is mixed.
So any kid could be the president.

You simply melt right in,
It doesn't matter what your skin,
It doesn't matter where you're from,
Or your religion, you jump right in

To the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.
Oh, what a stew,
Red, white, and blue.

America was the New World
And Europe was the Old.
America was the land of hope,
Or so the legend told.

On steamboats by the millions,
In search of honest pay,
Those nineteenth century immigrants sailed
To reach the U.S.A.

Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
Is the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.

What good ingredients,
Liberty and immigrants.

They brought the country's customs,
Their language and their ways.
They filled the factories, tilled the soil,
Helped build the U.S.A.

Go on and ask your grandma,
Hear what she has to tell
How great to be American
And something else as well.

Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
Is the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.

The great American melting pot.
The great American melting pot.

Immigration

Good luck with that.

Australia, being its own continent, is easier for Governments here to make it HARDER for people to get in. The notable main way they do this is call refugees "queue jumpers" and "illegal immigrants", and redefine which areas count as parts of Australia for immigration purposes (all the smaller islands were put outside this area).

Of course, the United States has a history of calling out for immigrants with much fanfare. In Australia we got convicts, and later paid folk 10 pounds to come, and there was the infamous "White Australia" policy (from which you can be sure that "white Australians" had all the political power at the time.

I saw clips of the demonstations in Washington. I'm glad they stood up for themselves, as it showed just how much the US economy depends on them.

Not anytime recently. Every tried to get into the US on a permanent basis? I tried helping a friend in Brisbane come to America as a skilled worker. Three years of banging our heads on a rock, and failing miserably. She gave up last year.

That's a damn shame.

I was in upstate New York the other month without a VISA. The reason I was able to do that however, was that I was planning on leaving in under 90 days.
