New Years Resolution #1: - Be more trusting of Humans.
The new VCR says HI And BYE when you turn it on or off. This creeps me out to no end.

This is far superior to the old VCR I had that would notify you whenever it changed between Hi-Fi and Normal mode, by displaying in HUGE letters "NORM" "HI-FI" across whatever you were watching. A bad tape would bounce back and forth constantly. I had friends who would yell "NORM!"(like from Cheers) when "NORM" appeared, and "Afternoon everybody"(rather subdued), when it said "Hi-Fi". It was kind of like living with George Wendt.

Afternoon everybody!
NORM!
Afternoon everybody!
NORM!
Afternoon everybody!
NORM!
Afternoon everybody!
NORM!
Afternoon everybody!
NORM!

Yeah, it got old fast.

Last time I walked into a Sears department store, there were these big stickers on the doors: "hi" and "come in" as I walked in, and "bye" and "thanks" as I walked out. It was kinda cute, especially with the lower-case lettering. I was mildly impressed. Mobil gas stations thank you for choosing them, but Citgo stations do not. I prefer friendly to impersonal ... up to a point.

I often talk to my stuff...but I never really expect it to talk back. It kinda creeps me out. The one that REALLY got me was my old TV (which is now my sister's TV). If you put the sleep timer on it...JUST before it turns off, a ten second timer comes up...as it counts down to 5 another message pops up "Good night."

CREEEEEEEEEEEEPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY....

AAAAUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

That VCR is the bane of my late 80s, early 90s existance.

Back when I was tape trading, one girl who was my best source of Japanese anime had one of those. Back then,we didn't have good cable signals in Japan, or places like Animeigo or US MAnga Corps....no, we had off the air third generation copies.

And hers CONSTANTLY liked to tell that my recording was MONO then HI-FI...MONO..HI-FMONO...HI-FI...MONHIFI.....

When I finally bought a DVD of the MAcross movie, I actually got wierded out when the little tags DIDN'T appear on the screen. :)

I'm hoping this isn't an actual VOICE saying these things. Talking VCRs, after all, just shouldn't exist ^_^

I think at that point, if the VCR says HI And BYE vocally, we'll be in the thrall of killer mutant electronics trying to fry our brains for entertainment.
