This is far superior to the old VCR I had that would notify you whenever it changed between Hi-Fi and Normal mode, by displaying in HUGE letters "NORM" "HI-FI" across whatever you were watching. A bad tape would bounce back and forth constantly. I had friends who would yell "NORM!"(like from Cheers) when "NORM" appeared, and "Afternoon everybody"(rather subdued), when it said "Hi-Fi". It was kind of like living with George Wendt.
That VCR is the bane of my late 80s, early 90s existance.
Back when I was tape trading, one girl who was my best source of Japanese anime had one of those. Back then,we didn't have good cable signals in Japan, or places like Animeigo or US MAnga Corps....no, we had off the air third generation copies.
And hers CONSTANTLY liked to tell that my recording was MONO then HI-FI...MONO..HI-FMONO...HI-FI...MONHIFI.....
When I finally bought a DVD of the MAcross movie, I actually got wierded out when the little tags DIDN'T appear on the screen. :)
