This episode was just great all around.

What an excllent excellent excellent episode. The Cybermen have ALWAYS been my favorite Dr. Who monsters, more so than the Daleks, who I thought were just Davros' Robotic Thugs. I'm a big fan of pre-Davros Daleks, when they were mean and scheming, and felt like they COULD take the universe over despite being shaped like salt shakers. Thankfully, the new series has turned the Daleks BACK into the pre-Davros ones, so seeing them both going after each other was just pure bliss.

I also liked the feeling at the end. It was one of those "Dr. Who moves into a new era" feeling. Like at the end of War Games and beginning of Spearhead from Space. The shape of the series changed then. The same with the whole Traken/Logopolis/Castrovalva trilogy, and The Green Death, when the series basically ended the UNIT era of Dr, Who. With virtually everyone who has been a part of the series locked away in a secondary universe, you get that feeling of "The series is changing again." No more Jackie/Micky/Pete/Rose, which has been a huge part of the new series.

I did have some issues with the episode. Like seeing the Doctor "surrender" to the Cybermen...and then suddenly seeing him talking to the Daleks, without explanation. While watching I couldn't figure if they'd killed the Cybermen and taken their suits, or reprogrammed them, or what. The Hartman Cyberman was sad, yes, but totally unecessary. The "This is How I Died" red herring, come on folks, there's better ways to create suspense or get us to beleive she might die. The bride scene should not have gone on as long as it did as it negated any feeling of loss from that great ending. And only the Daleks got sucked into the abyss (I smell a blooper!) I miss the old Cyberman laser sounds. :)

Rumour running around is that the episode ran several minutes long and had to be cut down, so I'm wondering how many of my complaints were caused by the cuts (six minutes is a LOT of TV-time).

But oh, my, more, please. Much more.

Aye, I thought the 'Me Rose am dead' stuff was a bit much for what it actually turned out as.

Didn't we see Cybermen getting sucked up as well? Or do you mean that we only saw Daleks actually fall in? Because we saw Cybermen lifting off from various spots. (Of course, it was nice for them that it was all filtered through that one window, rather than having aliens crashing through the floor/ceiling/etc.)

And he disappeared afore he could tell her!! No!!!

The Daleks and Cybermen were just plain old giving each other sass in their verbal interactions, weren't they?

TALK-TO-THE-SUCKER-BE-CAUSE-THE-EYE-STALK-IS-NOT-LISTENING!

And yeah, we saw the cybermen "float" but after careful review, not a single one fell into the rift.

My theory, such as it is, is that the Cybermen were sucked in first and/or fell apart and/or were destroyed by being sucked in so quickly. Unlike the Daleks, the Cybermen simply weren't built to withstand the kind of punishment the Daleks can... and the Daleks were probably being kept from being sucked in so quickly because their antigrav units were on full reverse. :-)

...cause they just showed episode 1 of season 2 last Saturday, I gotta say that the daleks came first!

Cybermen were created because of contractual problems with Terry Nation prevented use of the Daleks. The new Dr Who did Daleks more or less right last season (especially the episode 'Dalek', which showed just how dangerous one of the buggers was, and just how they use suction caps to maipulate stuff), but I don't expect to see much of them every season.

the trouble with Cybermen is that they are seldom written right, and flucuate between "terrible menace" and "logical buffoons". Even so, I'd put my money on the Cybermen vs the Borg (mere copies) any day. Haven't seen them in action yet though I know they turn up in episode two because they're in the trailers for it. cetainly look less than "men in wetsuits" than they used to be.

Ah, who am I kidding - I'll watch Dr Who regardless of the effects - always have (but am pleased that the latest version is better in that respect).
