This week has been a week of "gunning in neutral."

Last weekend, my bathtub got a crack in it. It was one of the cheap rubbery-plastic dealies, and whatever it was standing on, it sure felt wobbly and unstable. Turns out it was. I stepped on an area where the plastic just kinda gave way like there was nothing underneath supporting it, and the plastic cracked. It wasn't a big crack, so I kept shower. I reported the problem to the landlords, and they said someone'd be out Thursday to fix it.

Other than Monday, when I was left on my own for a REALLY long exztended period which caused some massive overtime, frayed nerves, and hangups, the rest of the week was quiet, and boring. Little did I know this would be a hallmark of the whole week.

So, Thursday comes along, and I have no cash or anything. No problem, I knew Thursday would be a wasted day, so I sat and drew AWFW all day long while they worked on the tub. I cooked the last of the groceries, thinking I would grab some the next day, and kinda lounged the day away. I'd be more than busy on Friday.

That evening, with every one out of the house, I sat down to scan my comic. First thing to come up "THERE ARE NO SCANNERS DETECTED." Not a problem, my scanner had been acting funny anyway, I just reseated the power adapter and ::click:: ::poof::.

1997-2006

The poor thing...she was old and needed replacing, but she gave me a good nine years and probably THOUSANDS of scans, esepcially after I started doing comics....

But again, not a problem, I'll buy one Friday when my paycheck comes in! I've already got one in mind, in fact (Thank you for all the offers of replacement scanners, by the time they got here, my new one would have arrived :) ).

I did manage to get some encoding done, though - I encoded two episodes of The Chase I recorded off the air in 1987. The video was great, the sound was lousy, but after a little tinkering, the sound came out beautifully. For a twenty year old SLP VHS recording, it looks like a ten year ols SLP VHS recording. :D

I didn't wait for it to reencode to XVid, however. The sooner I went to sleep, the sooner I would get paid!

And when I woke up, I wrote a note telling the tub-guy (who would come back to recaulk the new bathtub) to let himself in cause I was gonna be a consumer whore! I checked my bank account to see what I had in there and....

I didn't have anything. In fact, I had less than anything because an auto-pay bill came in and dropped me below zero.

After much panic and yelling and phone calls and IMs, I found out our company doesn't pay every other Friday. It pays on the 3rd and the 18th of every month. I've never heard of that before. My last two paychecks were on Friday because the 18th of September fell on a Friday, and the 3rd of September fell on Sunday, which they pushed back to Friday to pay. So now I didn't have any money. Or gas. Or groceries for that matter. Not till Monday. My get up and go, got up and went.

I was just kind of in shock, you know? Like everything I looked forward to just dissapeared. That look that Wile E Coyote gets when he realizes he's going to fall off that cliff, seconds before he does. So I just sat and plodded through my Friday. I didn't draw, I didn't play games, I just kinda...stared off into the wilderness waiting for the day to end.

And here it has.

Yeah, it'll be tight, but not too bad.

It pays on the 3rd and the 18th of every month. I've never heard of that before.

For what it's worth, I've worked at two jobs that did the 5th and 20th for payday. I much prefer a set day over a set date, however.

Cheers,
Gwen Smith

...problems seem endemic lately. Been having trouble booting my PC in the alst few days, which spurred me in to backing up everything (just in case).

I'm on my third scanner, though if I had my drutheers it'd be the A3 flatbed one they had at "Cybercycle" at my uni. Of course that was really a fancy photocopier, but it could scan my A3 line work for my Honours Project directly!
