Sunday nights are sorta my "big" nights. I get off work early on those days, 6PM and I don't need to go to bed till 3AM, so that makes up for the short Saturday night I get. My paycheck finally came on that afternoon just before I left work, so I threw a half a tank of gas into the truck.

Knowing that I was just 30 miles from rolling over to 200,000 miles, I decided to go for a ride, and head up towards Austin to pick up some stuff I'd left at Dean's. But I took a nice long trip getting there, along with exploring some new sections of what seemed to be a "newer" post road compared to the stagecoach road I know really well.

The area between Buda and Kyle has always been kinda "iffy" for me, when it comes to finding old roads. The stagecoach road route I'd known for a while had some wierd little anomalies. The road going into Buda, to connect to the stagecoach road going into Kyle, makes a really hard artifical east turn, when there's also a road going straight. The stagecoach road also skirts "behind" Kyle, not into it, which is wierd. It IS the old stagecoach road, though, since it goes into an area called Nance's mill.

However, now that I actually LIVE here, I was able to explore a little more thoroughly, and found a few signs that there was a "newer" highway that made a lot more sense, probably once the State had decided to develop highways, instead of just letting anyone drive where they wanted. Those highways were really crooked until the 30s when the WPA striaghtened them. I found a few pieces of what was then Highway 2 which sent me straight into Kyle, instead of going around it, and with only one turn I was at the Courthouse. THIS made a lot more sense than going behind Kyle. The stagecoach road was prolly established before Kyle was (there was another ghost town in the area called Mountain City that it was routed to).

Once you leave Kyle, though, the highway road doens't match up with Buda at all. It heads that way, then makes a hard turn to the east and loops around Buda. I didn't think the highway would miss Buda like that, but I DID fine ONE map from about 1918 or so, that shows a real generic dogleg around Buda, which told me this was at least the highway at one time. It matches up perfectly with the Old San Antonio Road in Buda. I guess it missed Buda, and hit Goforth instead, with the old stagecoach road branching off and serving Buda.

And just north of Buda, at Twin Creek Road, my girl hit 200,000 miles. ::pets her::

On the way up, I took a good number of panoramic pictures of a cold front coming in (there are quite a few panoramas I've yet to put together), and caught a thunderstorm "billowing" up. So I tried to take a pic every ten minutes or so as I drove up to Austin. About the otherside of Kyle, though, the camera lost it's charge right away just after I put in new batteries!. I thought that was really strange, so I took out the hiptop, and contnued taking pictures with that. More on this later.

I continued up to Austin, stopped by the PO Box and picked up the blouse that was waiting for there (I do most of my clothes shopping online, no need to have me escorted out of the lady's dressing room in handcuffs) and called Dean to see what we were gonna do. As it turned out, it was a tasty Beef Saag dinner at Taj Palace. Two things I hate about San Marcos - no Dim Sum and no Indian.

I really really like my hiptop. A lot. I got to the Indian place, and a certain someone who shall not be named was late. I called this certain someone who said he was just on his way, and then proceeded to log into AIM and chat with folks form the parking lot, as well as websurf. I LIKE THIS.

After dinner, I came home with a few donated groceries, a few pots and pans, and my popcorn popper(!). When I finally got home I sat down and bought a new scanner with the paycheck I just got. I was totally on budget, bought whay I needed to, saved half of my bills, and was just waiting for Tuesday when I could go grab my new glasses.

Monday night I went to take pictures of the blouse I just bought for Emily when I noticed none of the buttons were working. The camera went on, and off, and nothing else worked. After trying to figure out what was going on, the low battery light came on (on fresh rechargable batteries) and then it "blinked off." I turned it back on, and got an E18 error, which Emily found out was a "Lens retraction" error. It was easily fixed, but after a while, the camera just refused to turn on. What sucks, is it was JUST over the warranty.

So here I was, finally paid off, waiting on glasses, and I decided...well...I use my camera for the comics. The comics get me money, although not much. If I got the camera, I'd torpedo my paycheck If I waited, I'd have to use the Sidekick camera, which, to be honest, is not all that good. So, I made a quick new budget. I'd torpedo the paycheck on the camera AND extra groceries.

So I bought the new camera online, and went out and bought 10 days of groceries and snacks so I wouldn't be tempted to buy fast food. I have $15 left from this paycheck, nothing saved for rent or utilities (all due at the end of the month), but I have a camera and scanner again. The comic will pay for it all in a few months, and my next paycheck covers all my bills, although it'll be tight. The one after that will be for glasses.

Today, during my lunch break, my scanner came in. It's tiny! My old scanner was about an inch tall, this new one? Can't be more than a third of an inch! And it's FAST!I like this. Very very very much.

The camera should be in tomorrow, and I should be back in form. Now, assuming I can get by the next two weeks on $15, I should be okay. If it wasn't for the camera AND the scanner, this would be my first paycheck that I actually had money saved (and could start paying some of you back on).

And that's the week that was. :)

Oh, and the first test scan I did to see how the colors come out on the new scanner? The most obnoxiously rainbow colored thing I could find:

You really are roughing it out there. Tell you what -- assuming my employment situation stays reasonably stable, next time we're at a con together I'll treat you to Indian. Unless we're someplace as nekulturny as San Marcos, or where the entire town closes for the weekend like in Durham.

The nice thing about Austin being not too far from here, is that there is an actual Indian Grocery up there - I can get Indian Frozen Food and microwave pappadums en masse, there, and unfreeze it when I feel lonely for civilization. :)

Still no Dim Sum, though....

$2.50: not a particularly recent printing I gather...

Then again, it probably wouldn't have the original cover if it was, further reducing the collectibility...
