My article is up for deletion at Wikipedia. I actually signed in for the first time in two years to vote "DELETE."

The less mention of me there is on a site I've grown to loathe, the happier I am.

My final rant says a lot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jenn_Dolari

Basically, the tug of war began when I was introduced to WP by a fan of my comics. She invited me to write an article, which I did. I felt it was very objective and even handed. Of course, I didn't know the vanity rule, but also felt it didn't apply here as I was INVITED to write the article.

After that, I was basically branded a vanity writer, no matter what I did. The final straw came from when I saw someone post that I "only edited my comic pages and biography." After pointing out all my various contributions, it was changed to "MOSTLY edits..." I was also told that "he based his post on outside sources."

Wikipedia is a good source of info. It is not a fun place to be involved with. And one I'd rather not be involved with, or even be mentioned in.

Frankly, Wikipedia is very clique-y. The problem is not so much "You shouldn't be editing your own articles" which I kept away from TILL I WAS INVITED TO DO IT AGAIN, but the fact that I was pretty much branded as a vanity writer by an important clique, and that was used against me too many times.

I'm not a crazy person, I won't go dogging it until it goes down like some people who keep Emailing me asking to joint heir anti-Wikipedia crusades. That's not for me. But I have nothing but unhappy memories of my time there.

A lot of that reminds me of the kinda of academic bull I dealt with when studying Anthropology in college.

Mixed experience of wikipedia

It certainly seems to have its own culture, and way of doing things that are not exactly academic. I joined early last year in order to create the Modern Gallae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Gallae) page. I've edited a few other pages as well, with various scontent and interest. Mind you, the expertise I've developed in doing that, has come in handy in working with the ComicGenesis Wiki (http://cgwiki.comicgenesis.com/index.php/Main_Page) (which is much less pretentious, and more self-serving).

That fact that anyone can alter a page initially suggests some sort of evolution and refinement in content, but that's not really the case, is it? Of course the other thing is, just because you want the page deleted, should it be? If Harrison Ford or Vladimir Putin wanted their pages deleted (I'm sure they both have one), should they be?

I guess the question I'm putting here is this - have you become enough of a public figure in comics/web comics to justify a page (not necessarily the one that's there at the moment)? For example, if I follow the What links here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Whatlinkshere/Jenn_Dolari) link, I find that (apart from the 9 "housekeeping" entries) there are 8 pages with content that link to the page. Now they could link to your user page, but that wouldn't really be appropriate, as you may not be a user for much longer.

Perhaps a rewrite by another wiki user would be preferable - that couldn't be contested or claimed to be a "vanity post". I'd volunteer to do this, but maybe I'm not the best qualified to do so.

2nd Time?

You never mentioned that this was the 2nd time a discussion for deletion has come up. I just found the first discussion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Jenn_Dolari) from December 2005. This might not make me too popular with you, but I'm going to suggest an independent rewrite of the page.

If you want to do a page one rewrite, please do. I don't "own" the page and personally, it's no skin off my back if you do.

I think you're making too much of this invitation that you got. Am I correct to assume that it was just some random person that did it? Unless it was some Wikipedia administrator who invited you, I don't see why it should entitle you to any special priviledges. Said inviter was probably also ignorant of the vanity editing guidelines at Wikipedia.

I think you're missing the point. The problem isn't the fact that I wrote the articles (and yes, the first time was a random invite, but the second was a note from a Wikiproject editor to not VFD an article is I contributed to it).

The problem is that I seem to have been branded for it. That stuck in my craw. And was ammunition to delete those articles by folks who have very low opinions of webcomics.

What I did was send a bunch of people to the AFD in an attempt to prove my notability, AND get the article deleted so that if someone else makes a new one it won't get deleted for "Jenn wrote it."

And if it doesn't get a new article on Wikipedia at all? No skin off my back.

Someone should VFD Wikipedia itself. I can't stand how pretentious the website has become, especially since I've been with it practically since it started. The fact that the cliquish natures are being rewarded with adminships really pissed me off, and how pretentious the requirements for getting a mention in Wikipedia are. It basically boils down to how big your e-genitalia is, and that's what irritates me the most. It's one giant Internet pissing contest.

I'm not entirely certain how much they'll care, but it's clear that *somebody* is annoyed at our input, one way or another, else they wouldn't have stated that this is not a ballot.
I'm also plugging what I think is an amusing vote on my part. I hate being pithy into a vacuum.

I'm going to go ahead and do something I feel is silly and needless, but...

...isn't this precisely the attitude I've taken for years about politics, and been repeatedly accused of being Part Of The Problem for?

I mean, I vote now, because I recognize that this system absolutely isn't perfect, but that doesn't mean it's irrelevant, or that it shouldn't be improved by precisely the kind of people who oppose the problems within it.

I'm not trying to be a bitch...just asking a provocative question, because those are usually the only ones I come up with. :\ Please don't be mad!

I am sorry but even though I understand how you feel about this issue that you are faced with on Wikipedia, I will not be going there to vote for the Deletion.

Having been one of the "VERY FEW" who have never even been to Wikipedia, I want to keep my record intact. If it means that I actually have to visit the site, even to just vote for a deletion, I will not do it.
