I think I might remember something from business finance class about unscrupulous companies trying to encourage people to go into credit debt by showing them credit scores that are just this side of fraudulent (and maybe even a little to that side of it). I don't remember how it works, and I have no idea if that's what's going on here, but, caveat emptor. I know what they say about looking gift horses in the mouth, but at least tap on the side to see if there's a hollow sound. :)

Personally, I don't think they're supposed to give you any credit information unless you ask for it yourself. In this case, chances are your actual credit score is either higher or lower than 717.

Which, in response to:
Current mood: I have thousands of overdrafts!

I put my money on "lower".

Also, if your credit is in dire straits, I don't think any reputable lender or credit card company would let you go deeper into debt.

I did ask for it myself. I wanted to see what it was, and got it.

And my credit was never really in dire straits - I simply had NO credit. I usually joke around that "They were stupid" or "they dont' know what they're getting" because my parents had (and still have) some of the worst credit on the planet. The reason I'm so wary of credit cards is because of them.

Once they gave me the card (I have been throwing out card requests willy nilly for ages now), I checked up on the bank and found out they are reputable, but are kinda "scavengy" taking on hard-luck/no-luck cases.

The only real problem I have with them are all the fees they tack on, and nearly every credit card company does that.

There's no good answer for that. I got our family through a very bad year on credit card debt, but have laboured under that invidious lash for a long time since.

My best revenge is to do all my deposit banking at the local Credit Union, which has exactly 400 member/owner/shareholders and isn't beholden to any of the banks. Sure, there's a risk of an economic catastrophe taking the village out (and thus taking out all of our deposits), but as our strange little technological cottage-industry is one of the larger local employers I am confident that we could get through almost anything together now.

When I die, far as I am concerned, whatever debts I yet owe to the Big Banks? They can just suck it up.
