I type WAY too fast for the Dreamcast to handle,
so typo notices will be deleted on site. Stupid
rassin' frassin' Dreamcast grumble
grumble....

Anyone know iuf there's a way I can remap the
CTRL key in Linux to another character? This
Dreamcast keybaord doesn't have a "true" CTRL key
and Linux without a Control key is pretty
useless.

I found a lot of sites that tell you how to remap
the keyboard where the HARDWARE is (Windows
registry hacks, Xmodmap files) but I'm looking ro
something for Telnet. The Dreamcast keybaord
actually has a CTRL key, but it seems just to be
for show, as it does NOTHING. Same with the ALT,
Num Lock and "S1/S2" keys. I thin this is just
an ASCII keyboard. Dean has an adapter to plug
in a PS2 Keboard - mabe that'll work.

Granted, the Dreamcast was never MEANT for the
hoops I'm putting it through, but I can't afford
a laptop.

Anyways - dean's family is here, and as usual,
Dean is in Impress the Parents mode. This
usually involvs wild gestiucalation, excited
utterances and general over explanation of
everything.

He's never been happier. :)

Meanwhile, I'm taking a day off after the Massive
Cleaning Project. I haven't been sleeping well
lately (My body wants to go to bed about 9AM
instead of 7:30 and wake up at 6PM instead of
3:30), and I really am exhausted. I'm hoping to
get SOME sleep today.

I real should pencil AWFW before I go to bed,
since it's all done in silhouette. Shouldn't be
hard to do. I also need togo back and edit the
last episode opf AWFW ASAP. In all the wrangling
to get the last speech sounding nice I left one
MAJOR MAJOR part out. It doesn't have much to
bear over all, but I just recently realized how
it's awkward that andrea is worried about her
house and her friends, and makes no mention about
her mom. Will edit that ASAP.

Is AWFW too too depressing? I mean, i neve found
the first act all that depressing, and 24 Hours
was literally supposed to be the worst 24 hours
of Andreas life, but in general, is it just a
realy sad series? It will lighten up son,
though, and we WILL be seing a hapy andrea in the
next storyline....

My kingdom for a ^X and ^Q,,,,

Why do you need ^X and ^Q? If you just need to use an editor, vi doesn't use any control characters. I use nail/Mail to read mail, vi to edit and lynx to browse - no control keys needed :-)

Otherwise you might have to play around a little. Depending on what you want to do, you might be able to change $TERM to something a little more useful so that you can pgup/pgdn/etc in applications. Alternatively if you need to do other stuff you could modify your terminal settings (use stty) so that ^H or ^? (whatever you delete key is) does something other than delete like suspend or break or something. Last ditch effort... assuming you're using command-line telnet... instead of typing "telnet hostname", just type "telnet". That'll get you to to the telnet prompt, where you can do "set ec ^X" (or ^whatever), then "send ec". Have a look at all the sets and sends you can do - if you replace "escape" with a regular key you might be able to escape back to the telnet prompt and send just the control key you need as you need it.

Have you looked into the possibility it might just be a dirty key? Hehe

The main reason I want CTRL keys is I like using
PINE for my mail, and that has CTRL keys all
over the place.

Right now, to telnet into my system from the
dreamcast, i'm using a java client
(http://entropy.tmok.com/~dolari/telnet) so
there's no command line, but maybe there's
something in the HTML I can fiddle with. I do
know the CTRL keys work when running the java
client from a PC.

I think the main problem is is that this is might
be an ASCII only keyboard. Even the Function
keys don't work (well, they work in the Dreamcast
software, but Emacs doesn't recognize the
keypresses).

I'll try the STTY thing, though. If all else
fails, I guess i'll use nail...anything beats the
CRAPPY CRAPPY Dreamcast Email program. :D

Ctrl characters are part of ASCII.

If you were local, I'd be able to take one of my *old* systems and hook it up to see what character codes the dreamcast was sending when you typed. But doing that over the net is beyond me.

The lack of ctrl chars is like a Dreamcast issue. The lack of function keys is a matter of needing the right termibfo or termcap file.

I used to log into unix systems using a Tandy Model 100 notebook computer, and had to *massively* customize a termcap file to make it work (little detail like a 8 row by 40 column display... :-)

The problem is that you can't remaap ctrl at the far end because ctrl isn't a character. It's a "shift" key. It *modifies* the character that is sent rather than sending a character itself.

So you need to get the Dreamcast to recognize the ctrl key.

Arrow keys, and various function keys *if supported* send one or more characters.

So any fix has to be applied at the Dreamcast, not at the other end. (sorry).

If swapping for a PS/2 keyboard doesn't fix things, then you'll have to use different software on the dreamcast. Assuming anything that works the way you want exists.

As for a laptop, if all you are using it for is email or web browsing, you can pick up something like the old Philips Velo on ebay pretty darn cheap. The keyboard is tiny, but usable (I wrote several stories on mine). And it has a built in modem.

You can even get an adapter that lets you use some PCMCIA cards with it. I found an ethernet card that works, but (alas) the mail software won't work over ethernet. But the web browser does!

You're right. I tried a PS/2 and XT keyboard and
both wouldn't send CTRL characters. Oh, well, it
was worth a shot.

There IS an effort to port Linux to the
Dreamcast, but I doubt I want to put that much
effort into it.

I really need a laptop. :D

Heck, there's a Linux available for the Philips Velo. Given that one of mine is refusing to cooperate with updating the version of Win CE I may actually try installing it on that one.

And depending on what you need to do on a portable system, you may be able to get by womething a lot smaller (and cheaper) than a laptop.

I'd be happy with a Web TV type thing, which is what I use the Dreamcast for. I've always waned a Dell L-Series laptop (the time ones), but I don't need a Pentium 3/4 for browsing the web.

You can actually browse with an old 486 system. I've run Arachne on the 486 that does some "background" tasks on my network. It's slow, but it works.

I've got to dig an old Mac SE with an ethernet card out of storage so I can see how bad (or not bad) it is at browsing.

Oh, I know I can use a 486. I had a 386 running Win 3.11 that was an Internet Portal for browsing when someone was using the Pentium (I actually have 16-bit versions of lots of internet applications from back then :) ). I figure, if I 'm going to invest in a laptop, it should do SOMETHING (which is why a P2, 233Mhz is my low end limit for a laptop).

Ah. Slight misunderstanding. A 486 running *DOS*. No windows.

Actually, you could probably run Arachne on an XT. But that requires a bigger masochist than I am.

SURPRISE! I'm the one who e-mailed you to begin with ^^;;

I had no idea you had Livejournal, and I'm surprised you're not swamped with friends/comments like a lot of artists/comic writers I know are.

I sorta rescinded what I said in a followup e-mail. It's a challenging comic to read. It's not too depressing, but I'm looking for some pressure-relief in the upcoming storyline -- nothing good ever seems to happen to poor Andrea! All that said, being someone who suffers from both transgender issues and being someone who sort of waffles through game/otherkin communities, your comics really did speak to me.

Heehee, I totally agree!

It was Anile (aninazerg) who actually showed me your comics, and I've very glad she did. They're truly beautiful! ^_^

It does get better, very soon in fact. Chroma Divine and My Funny Valentine are supposed to be lighter episodes, with very little sadness until a certain event.

And I'm saying this while drawing what is possibly THE darkest episode of AWFW yet. I hope I don't turn off many readers with it...but it DOES get better, almost IMMEDIATELY after the first episode of Chroma Divine.

I think AWFW is a coming of age type story, and thats never easy, so I think the sadness fits well for it :)
