It's 1996 all over again.

1) I've been mulling over some concept designs for a Mortal Kombat fan site. I haven't been specifically asked for the work, but it's been hinted that I should come up with something. Which is wierd because I've been out of the MK scene since about 2000. Mainly because of the devolution of Usenet, but also some percieved bad blood from Midway. Also...heaven help me...I didn't really like the latest installment of MK all that much. It's got gorgeous character designs, wonderful stages, but plays too much like Tekken for my tastes. Still, I'm being pulled back into the MK arena...so....

2) Because of that, I dusted off my Playstation 2 and (after crippling my hands on Robotech Battlecry) playing my PSX copy of MK Trilogy (when it runs) MK4 and MK 5. I've also been playing MK 1, 2, 3, and UMK3 by "other" means. I forgot how much I really enjoyed these games. Even MK5 ain't that bad once you learn the massive Tekken dial-a-combos. Well, 1,2,4 and 5. :)

3) Due to the Extended Keenspace Downtime and my quest for serverspace, Kevin up and gave me my old site back at Dragondata. From about 1996-2000 this was Jenn Dolari HQ (the world needs more free Shell Accounts). Dolari.org, AWFW and CS have been relocated there.

4) Several people from the old AGMk have EMailed/IMmed me in the last few days. One is doing an MK Sprite Based Comic and saw that Iw as doing hand drawn ones. Another just wrote to say "Hey, howya doin'."

5) I'm still unemployed - which is how I spent mosxt of 1996, 1998 and 1999. Talk about Deja Vu! ::laugh::

I miss those glory days....

Anyways, Keenspace's Boardy server is now back up and so are my comics. They really screwed up last week, which was a pretty important one for me . I had a buildup to Carrie's Song going on and a possible Big Exposure for AWFW. Because of the downtime, the song is being postponed a week (to give people time to read this week's comics), and I haven't heard back from Coast to Coast about AWFW at all. And I'm a might miffed.

This morning both CS and AWFW came up and seem to have my whole site online. Which is good because I accidentally erased my latest backups making the consolidated Dolari.org site. Originally I was so peeved that I was gonna take the whole site off Keenspace and go to Dragondata (it's the main reason I was looking for hosting space). Now, I'm wondering if I should keep the Dragondata AND Keenspace, and use one or the other as a mirror?

Con: A lot of people have the thought in their head that Keenspace comics suck,
Pro: I'd have two sites hosting the comics. If one goes down, the other is still up.
Con: I'd need to keep two seperate versions of the comics (one with ads, the other without and different links).
Pro: I'm used to Keenspace's tracking program more than Sitemeter's.
Con: All the sites won't be consolidated under www.dolari.org which is something I've been thinking about doing since I got the domain.
Pro: The Keenspace site is more well known than the Dragondata one.
Con: Keenspace is very prone to breakdowns. So much so that a web-saavy friend of mine has brought it up more than once.
Pro: It would take a lot of Emailing sites to update their links.

I'm still pretty predisposed to dropping Keenspace at this point, and I'm gonna sleep on it. HOWEVER, I'd like your (the readers) input on this one, since it's you who'd be most impacted. PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

You may want to look into the possibility of a redirect or "CName" - I did this for my own domain name. I'm not sure if it's possible with subdomains; if so you could pop in a little redirect and let them be awfw.dolari.org and cs.dolari.org. I am not webgeek enough to explain how to do it, though. If it can be done, the reader would type that in and it would show them www.blah.com/(comicnamehere)/ but all they'd see is the (comic).dolari.org URL.

Keenspace is not necessarily reliable, as just proven, and my own predisposition if I were serious about my comic and had the resources would be to drop it. However, make sure beforehand that you are not going to get hit with a massive bill for bandwidth; even if your provider says you get unlimited bandwidth (or gives an unspecified amount of bandwidth, sounds like a more informal agreement from what you said), there's usually a clause in there for "excessive" use. Being hit with a huge bill due to a spike in popularity, or having the site turned off in mid-month as happens so often to UnderPower (http://underpower.non-essential.com) would not be shibby.

Right now I do sorta have a redirect. www.dolari.org takes you to my main site, www.dolari.org/cs takes you to Closetspace and www.dolari.org/awfw takes you to AWFW.

I have the option of "freezing" the URL to always say www.dolari.org/cs instead of http://www.dragondata.com/~dolari, but then all my referrers say everyone is coming from www.dolari.org and not the site they're supposed to be from.

I don't think bandwidth is going to be a problem for now. Ask me again in a year. :)

Weird, I didn't even realize they made MK4 for PS. I thought the only home version of 4 was Gold on the DC.

MK4 came out for the PSX, the N64 and the PC. All of them were subpar to the DC version, though. The only version I don't have is the N64.

The fun thing was was it was a pretty straight port of the arcade code with tweaks. Stuff that was taken out of the arcade code really wasn't taken out (just disabled). So with a Gameshark, you COULD play Randper Combat on the PSX (It took forever and glitched out).

In early versions of the arcade, Kitana was playable, and they ported that over as well, then disabled it. With a gameshark, you could make her a playable character on the N64 and PC (And sorta on a PSX).

They also made a Skull Stage that they took out because it looked really really bad on the PSX (The textures were too tiny, stretched out too big) so they took it out of all the ports.

Redundancy is good. Maybe put up an alternate banner ad if it's faster than removing it?

There is actually a solution to this problem...

If you have access to your name server define a awfw.dolari.org and a cs.dolari.org to be A records for 66.220.2.7, and I can arrange for the web server to show the right comic. Send a message back if you are interested.

PS... anyone who says that "Keenspace comics suck" is pretty closed minded.

Appreciate the offer, but I've already got people pointing to the current sites, and it was a mess getting THEM to convert over. :)

The "Keenspace comics suck" attitude is one I notice from Comic Snobs who simply MUST have hyper-detailed graphics and 80 story-arcs going on at once. They're snooty. :)

I kinda see Keenspace like all those Underground comics of the 80s. Neat stories, neat art, and no niche is too small. ;)
